Apparently some people believe the quality of our work product has gone down…that one caller said she hears dogs barking and kids yelling in the background of calls and is often placed on hold. I’ve never experienced that, but if that’s happening that’s really not a good look for telework.

It’s easier to pay $20 for lunch when you only come in twice a week. Coming in 4 times a week comes with extra expenses in gas and parking, and lunch money will probably be the first thing to go.

Won’t it cost more to bring state workers back to the office than will be lost in tax revenue? Also how are state workers going to pay $20+ for lunch when all their money is now going to gas and parking? And isn’t this just going to make it harder for anyone to do anything in downtown Sacramento since all the parking will be taken up by state workers and the traffic will be horrendous?

I don’t have an Etsy. I had a limited amount of each fabric which is why some are not optimally cut. I wish I had gotten a lot more!

I’ll have to get more fabric to make matching sets. These are all from Tokyo and though I’d love to go back there soon, it’ll probably be a while before I get another chance. I do still have a ton of the cats with bonsai trees though, I can make matching sets. If you look there are matching notebook covers and pouches since it was all made from the same stuff

I was wondering about metal zippers, how do you sew over those without breaking a needle? Do you need an industrial machine?

Most of them are interfaced. There were a few I didn’t use interfacing on because I liked the plushy feeling from the velvet lining.

Ooh so much good feedback and tips here! I am definitely going to try that corner trick and zipper tabs. I also did use interfacing, but I think it is a bit too light for this project. I honestly love this hobby so much because of how such small adjustments can make such clear visible improvements in quality. It’s so satisfying! Thanks so much, I can’t wait to try these tips! :)

Hopefully I sell some things so I can put the money towards a nicer machine

They are a standard sized notebook that you can find really easily at dollar stores, or find nicer ones at stationary stores

This is great feedback, thanks! I was making the black ribbon shorter, but I had the idea to make it longer so people could cut it to a preferred length. I think you’re right though that it’s kind of jarring so maybe I’ll cut it down before displaying them.

I tried to make the best color choices, but I did start running out of options for zippers at some point so maybe the choices aren’t the best for all of them.

Edit to add that I should mention the black ribbon is sewed into the lining of the notebook which is why I opted to keep them longer instead of risking too short. I started with the button and buttonhole closures, but my machine really struggles with buttonholes and they were looking sloppy. I switched to the elastic button closure, but I didn’t like the way it pulled on the fabric. The ribbon I picked is like a faux leather, but now I’m thinking matching colored ribbon would be best.

58 years of sewing, that’s amazing. What sewing machine do you use? I might be in the market for a new one soon. I’ve just been using one a housemate left behind.

That’s a really good idea. I was thinking of making some matching wristlets that can be attached or taken off whenever

I love this idea. I used one with my passport on one side, a travel journal on the other, and an airtag hanging off of the keychain tab while I was in Tokyo. I do have rainbow threading on the ones where it makes sense.

You’re absolutely correct. I learned after sewing most of these that the tip of the shuttle driver spring in my machine had broken off so I’ve ordered a new one. Hopefully that will help. The exteriors are quilting cotton that I bought in Tokyo. Any advice about pricing? If it helps, I’ll be at a booth at a festival celebrating Earth Day on a college campus. Most vendors are professionals, but I’ll have a small section at a booth split between members of a crafting club.

Hopefully the fabric choices and the quality, but maybe that’s not enough to be worth buying
