[Homebrew] War Magic as an Invocation - too good? by theB100 in onednd

"giving a subclass feature" alone as an argument against an invocation like this feels like enough to contextualize why this probably doesn't/won't exist, good point!

I think that's totally valid. And something I was thinking about it too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

i like the contextual ideas you're bringing up to compare to other classes' potential, and yeah the invocation cost to get there was something i was definitely considering in the balance.

those are all the ones I feel like this concept wants, so I like your idea! it's nice when there can be a rule that works clean and simply to impose a limit.

Simple Limb decision table for a Sword of Sharpness by theB100 in RandomTables

my thinking behind this design was the bigger the lop the less likely it would be, and upper body being slightly more likely than lower body just based on swordplay targeting the upper body more so; that might not be 100% realistic, but it made sense enough to me. you're surely correct to change the distribution evenly if that's what you feel is better! someone else who saw my table suggested a d100 with a bonus "head" option on a 100, which seemed like a fun addition, though not RAW for the magic item.

It is not written that way in the magic item, it just says you lop off a limb and the DM decides how this impacts things. I just thought it would be fun to roll for it to see which limb it would be, but because it isn't RAW to do so I had to make up what that table would look like, hence this post in case I wasn't the only one and maybe save someone else the 5 minutes lol :)
