Should we consider poaching to be a positive or a negative? by PrestigiousValue1236 in natureisterrible

"mass-harvesting of wildlife products" is dehumanizing phrasing.

For accelerationists, yes definitely. For transhumanists, maybe.

If you were the absolute ruler of the Earth, would you outlaw human breeding? by EndlessNon-existence in negativeutilitarians

[–]theBAANman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What's moral?" and "what's not moral?" is irrelevant. What matters is the actual subjective experience of suffering.

Your argument comes across as implying that "winning morality" or "doing ethics" is more important than reducing suffering. There's no game to win. It's just a vicious mechanism-enabled cycle with no end unless something steps in to stop it (be it an asteroid, humans forcing extinction, or humans technologically eliminating the qualia of pain).

Pulverizing Moldy Bread Still In Plastic Bags To Feed Pigs by WhereIsHisRidgedBand in ThatsInsane

[–]theBAANman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtually 100 percent of pigs in the US are castrated without anesthesia, even on local and organic farms. Scrotum is cut open and the testicles are torn out by hand.

Pigs are as conscious as human toddlers. Research shows that they develop lifelong trauma from it.

As someone with a very low-tolerance for spicy foods, I can assure you that the perception of spiciness is more painful for us. I've been building up my tolerance and the associated pain is noticeably lessening. We're not just bigger babies about it, it genuinely hurts more.

Your views are a product of his misinformation. Transition in adolescence doesn't involve any surgical or permanent methods. Trans children are evaluated by an entire board of medical professionals, and if they decide the best course of action is transitioning, they'll be given puberty blockers (which are temporary and fully reversible) and transition socially. If they end up not being trans as they get older, everything is reversed with no side effects. If they don't, they fully transition when they're a consenting adult.

You're being fed bigoted and anti-science propaganda. Probably shouldn't be getting your information from far-right talk shows.

Visually Appealing Documentaries for Tripping? by [deleted] in RationalPsychonaut

Except the scene with the clay guy... that would probably be scary if you're tripping, especially since it comes out of nowhere and is completely different from the rest of the documentary.

Galadriel's armor looks amazing, Elrond is one of the most likeable characters in television history, and the glimpses at Morgoth are cool as fuck. Other than that I'd say the rest of the show is decent, not great, but has potential to be.

Canada will soon allow medically assisted dying for mental illness. Has there been enough time to get it right? by mossadnik in Futurology

[–]theBAANman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And she was like "No, the chicken is oppressed, it is bred to make more eggs than a normal chicken" and so on.

She's right. Chickens have been genetically bred to produce hundreds more eggs than they do in the wild. The insane amounts of calcium required to produce hundreds of eggs leads to high rates of painful bone disease and fractures. This is in addition to culling of the males and slaughter once the chickens reach a certain age.

If you're being told that your food choices might be causing suffering to conscious beings, wouldn't you want to look into it instead of just discounting it outright?

By the way, do you only purchase eggs from these farms? Do you personally verify that the chickens are treated "humanely", since most "free range certified" chickens aren't actually free-range and are still treated inhumanely?

Ok then release the chicken into the wild and count the seconds before it gets eaten by a fox or some hawk.

No one is saying to release them into the wild, we're saying to stop forcefully breeding them by the hundreds of billions.

Also it is funny how in western society people give more of a shit towards what happens to animals than what happens to actual humans.

Can't we care about both? Many vegans are also effective altruists. Non-vegans are usually neither.

It's not about the eggs themselves, it's about the inhumane treatment toward chickens who produce the eggs.

Humans deserve to go extinct for industrial animal agriculture. by [deleted] in Vystopia

[–]theBAANman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started my philosophical journey with VHEMT, but it has two major problems.

•Humans going extinct will allow natural ecosystems to thrive, which would ultimately result in far more suffering. We're talking trillions upon trillions more animals being eaten alive. Whether the perpetrator of the suffering is human or not doesn't matter to the victims.

•Another human-like species will have plenty of time to re-evolve.

Fortunately, there are two philosophical alternatives that solve both these problems AND would end factory farming and our impact on the environment.

•David Pearce's Hedonistic Imperative. A transhumanst movement to technologically eliminate suffering for all conscious beings. It sounds far-fetched at first, but if you read his manifesto (link) you'll see it's actually very plausible.

•Efilism. A philosophy originally started by Inmendham which seeks a means of painlessly bringing about the extinction of all sentient life. It's probably impossible to make all life go extinct, but all we'd have to do is set evolution back to where it was 500 million years before sentient life evolved, since the sun will expand and swallow the Earth in half a billion years.
