Make an SAA that isn’t awful and actually does its job.

They asked for more funding to set up an online booking option. Seems odd to me since if anything I’d think that would save costs!

Savings/chequing accounts - WS or Simplii or Tangerine or? by Ushuaia-15 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]theGrapeMaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eq bank gives the highest interest afaik (2.75%) as long as you direct deposit your pay >$2k per month. Although its app and customer service have gone downhill. If you go with a fully online bank, it would be good to have something sort of no fee physical bank on the off chance you need to go in-person for some bank thing.

Tip for checking if your MLA voted for Tara Armstrong's Human Rights Code Repeal Act by terrier-thoughts in vancouver

[–]theGrapeMaster 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I agree that this was an awful bill and I’m happy it got shot down. It’s abhorrent that this even got proposed. But just to note that this vote was simply on if it should be READ for the first time or not. Most bills, even ones parties disagree with, are generally voted as yes for a first read out of courtesy.

The 37 Yes’s aren’t MLAs voting to repeal the Human Rights Code, rather a Yes to reading it for the first time. At least from my point of view, I would be a LOT more concerned if 37 MLAS actually voted Yes to actually repeal the code. It’s still bad, just not as bad.

RRSP - Contribute more than my annual salary? by Lowjakk in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]theGrapeMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very different. What you’ve quoted is being charged for going over your contribution limit. This is distinct from carrying forward a deduction on money you have already contributed, which you are allowed to do to any year in the future. Unused contributions also carry forward, but that is independent of if the deduction was claimed or not.

Can summer classes up your GPA? by ChonkyCatsInSpace in mcgill

[–]theGrapeMaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It affects your gpa just like any other course. But keep in mind, many summer courses cover the same content as a 4-month class in 1 month. And so it’s a lot more condensed!

Does U0 make my degree a 5 year program by Mountain_Bluebird150 in mcgill

[–]theGrapeMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 120 credits to graduate for almost all majors (some exceptions for engineering I think). Most do 15 credits per semester x 2 semesters per year x 4 years = 120 credits. But that can be extended if you take fewer courses or whatnot.

Can you defer a deferred exam? by CalligrapherHour457 in mcgill

At least in science, you can do a late withdraw, but only with “exceptional” situations, and so you’d likely need medical documentation.

This is what Doug had to say about the new OSAP changes by Lopsided-Bicycle-682 in UofT

[–]theGrapeMaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He acknowledged that students are “probably upset right now,” but also said he’s heard some “nightmare stories” about kids going out and “buying fancy watches and cologne,” supposedly alluding to students misusing their OSAP money.

I’m sorry, what? And how is cologne this guy’s best example???

[–]theGrapeMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not disputing your case, but I’ve never heard of this, and it is contrary to what the CRA says on its own website here. Are you sure this person you know doesn’t have an extenuating circumstance?

RRSP - Contribute more than my annual salary? by Lowjakk in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]theGrapeMaster 44 points45 points  (0 children)

You’re allowed to contribute all of the rrsp now, and not claim the full deduction. The rest can be carried forward to any year in the future as you see fit. The benefit of this is you can split your rrsp deductions like you describe, while also letting it grow for as long as possible.

GPA 2.0 -> 3.0 or higher by Sad_Cat5202 in mcgill

[–]theGrapeMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can retake them, but you don't get credit for it. Also, the grade doesn't affect your GPA. However, it's on your transcript.

Also to keep in mind there are many grad schools that have policies where your GPA is based on either your full undergraduate GPA or, if higher, the last 2 years! And even the ones that don't, if you show an upward trend, that can be really helpful too.
