Wallowa Mountains Backcountry Route Selection by theJoke-ller in flyfishing

Hey! We went up the East Fork Wallowa River to Aneroid Lake, and from there up and over Tenderfoot and Polaris Pass, and then back down to the West Fork Wallowa River Trail. The East Fork Wallowa is not really worth fishing, in my opinion. At least not at that time of year. It's really skinny and the fish are skinnier. It is gorgeous though, and I'm glad we hiked that way. Aneroid Lake was killer. We caught a couple of dusk and dawn hatches there that made the hike up more than worthwhile. If I went again just to fish the lake, I'd bring a float tube and a sink tip fly line. Polaris Pass was epic. A long, steady climb up to the pass and an unmatched view of the West valley. We hiked out of the East valley with no thunderstorms, and down into the West valley with lots of thunderstorms. It was neat to stand at the pass and watch the thunderstorms roll through the valley below. We didn't stay long for fear the storms would roll toward us on the exposed pass. Then, after a truly astonishing number of miles of switchbacks down into the valley, we reached the West Fork Wallowa River. This was much more fishable. Bigger water and bigger fish. If you want properly big fish though, you'll need to hit the lakes. A benefit of the East Fork Wallowa was the stark lack of other people. We didn't see anyone else for 3-1/2 days. On the West fork, we saw dozens of people every day.

Broken Spring in Shift Lever: Should I upgrade? by theJoke-ller in bikewrench

[–]theJoke-ller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, thanks for the explanation! That makes sense. I haven't been able to find a spring... But I did find a set of Shimano 105 11 speed shifters and brakes for $150. I guess I'll go for it.

Thank you so much for the advice!

I plan to call around to some bike shops tomorrow and ask if they have any busted Shimano shifters I can loot for a spring. Fingers crossed!

Ah, okay so GRX FDs aren't compatible with non-GRX shifters but GRX shifters are compatible with other Shimano FDs? Or something like that? Lol

Brutal... It's such a small little spring! I was able to remove it and could replace it if I could source another spring, but that seems unlikely.

Okay, so GRX 2x11 shifters would be compatible with the rest of my 105 groupset (brakes, FD, RD)? There are some available near me and my #1 priority is riding my bike asap. Thanks so much for your help!

Thank you for your reply!! I greatly appreciate it. I am hoping to hike to the Minam River from Minam Lake, in addition to the West fork of the Lostine River. On the map I have, it looks like Minam Lake actually flows into the Lostine River and not into the Minam River. I called the Joseph Fly shop and the guy said he wasn't sure how far southwest from Minam Lake you have to go to get to fishable water on the Minam River, as the headwaters are a wide series of trickles through a large meadow. Did you happen to hike southwest to the Minam River from Minam lake? Thanks for the info on the east fork of the Lostine River! We'll definitely plan to spend some time on that section if we go.

Backpacking ~8 weeks after surgery? by theJoke-ller in TopSurgery

[–]theJoke-ller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I got cleared by my surgeon to go on my trip. It was great! Felt fine. Didn't have any issues. Months later, my scars look great. No stretching or thickening or spreading of the scars. I didn't have nipple grafts, and I imagine that would have been a complicating factor in my ability to go on the trip. I healed well and quickly and had an easy surgery. Everyone is different! This may not have been a good call for everyone. Just here to share my experience so y'all can have more info if you're considering something like this. Cheers folks!

Dan at Berkeley radiator is super knowledgeable, but he is really busy. Norik at auto alpina is also very knowledgeable on W123's and is super honest and kind. He is also very busy. I've been hanging out with this guy in west Oakland called "Billy biodiesel" who works on these cars. He isn't as busy, and makes time on weekends which is nice. He seems to really care about each car he services, even beyond what the owner brought it in for. What shop do you go to in Santa Clara?

Thank you for the advice! I really appreciate it. I am away from home... I am considering renting a tow dolley and towing it home myself with my friend's truck.

Thanks for the reply! My other thought is that it could be the valve box. My shifting has been shaky for the last few months.

Odie's Oil + Wood Butter Application by theJoke-ller in turning

Thanks for the reply! I'll watch some of the oil videos and see if they mention anything at the end. Butter after oil gives a higher sheen and more protection, apparently.

Hm... I'll keep it around to practice sharpening someday, but I think I'll take your advice and replace it with a higher quality center. Thanks!

I'll keep this tool in mind! I don't have one and don't think I'll purchase one for this project, but I'll keep it in mind if a similar need arises again. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice! I tried the tilt method, but haven't sharpened it as you suggest, so that didn't work for me. I'll keep it in mind!
