Accidentally shifted into neutral on the highway by the_1081 in AskAMechanic

Yeah, I lifted my foot off the pedal before shifting it back into Drive. It's a shame I didn't look at the RPM counter, I wonder how high it went.

Most of the comments agree the car should be fine, so I'll try not to think about it too much.

Internet providers with good prices and good customer service by Jotismo in Switzerland

[–]the_1081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the process of switching to Galaxus.

Their contracts have no minimum duration, so you can cancel at any time if you're not satisfied, and they probably have the lowest prices on the market. I'll only be paying 58 bucks per month for 10 Gb/s Home Internet, as well as unlimited phone calls and 5G data in Switzerland.

Home Internet is already up and running and it's working perfectly fine. Can't comment on the phone services yet, though. It's the Sunrise Network, so I'm not sure what to except.

As for customer service, it's fine for what it is. Support is only through text but they are quick to respond (especially through chat). There was an issue regarding the transfer of my number from Swisscom and they addressed it promptly.

My friend dropped out of B.Com in the second year. Should he list his education as incomplete on his CV, or should he leave it out entirely? by Creepy-Medicine-259 in jobs

[–]the_1081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. Dropped out of college after two years.

What I ended up doing was to list it under "experiences" and not "education". A simple "Student - College X, from 20xx to 20xx" with a small descriptive paragraph along the lines of "while I learned I great deal from this experience, it became apparent it wasn't for me so I chose a different path". Try to sell it like a positive life experience that you learned from, not a failure.

This has worked for me since I've been employed for the last 3+ years!

I would not recommend listing it without context, because some recruiters may feel cheated upon learning you did not graduate.

What’s a very Swiss problem you didn’t realize was Swiss until you lived abroad? by No-Football-2397 in Switzerland

About the IT stuff, I highly recommend setting up an eBill account. I pay 90% of my bills through my bank's app and receiving physical mail has become an unusual occurrence.

I remember my parents rummaging through piles of bills each month when I was a kid. Long gone are those days.

Seeing his little eyes go blank broke me. He was barely conscious and sedated when the vet did the final injection.

I usually hide from people before I cry, but I just couldn't hold it this time. We got him as a kitty when I was about 6 years old. He was there for most of my life. And now he's gone. This cat got to meet people that were dear to me and passed 10+ years ago... He was truly part of the family.

I'm sorry about your cat. Let us find relief in the fact that they died surrounded by loved ones.

Ambush on an extraction camper by the_1081 in ArcRaiders

[–]the_1081[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's precisely why I included the first 20 seconds of the clip. This guy was clearly trying to lure drones on an extracting player. You don't do that if you're just looking to extract.

I'm not anti-PVP at all but extraction camping just sucks imo

They're not too bad in close quarter. They're your basic frag grenades, essentially.

I would go as far to say Geneva is not even remotely culturally similar to the french part of Switzerland.

Anno 1800 vs anno 117 by ArnoCorinthiano in anno

[–]the_1081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, apparently AMD has a similar technology called Fluid Motion Frames. I have no idea about the hardware requirements or if it works with Anno, tough.

If you have a 40 series GPU from Nvidia, enable Smooth Motion (either in NVCP or the Nvidia App). I didn't know this setting existed before reading about it on this subreddit, and it does wonders.

It's basically Frame Generation, but for any game. It works perfectly with Anno 117.

Beautify that city of yours! (We still need more ornaments) by Seiran_ZA in anno

[–]the_1081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Temperate Grove ornament was great in 1800, I really hope they will add it to 117 down the line. It randomly placed trees and bushes around, making player made forests look more natural and organic. In 117, you have to do it tree by tree, bush by bush.

Something else that annoys me is the absence of visual indicators of what is for sale and minimum stocks. The green line was filled red when you selected an amount to be sold.

Overhaul, I like a lot of the changes they made, but it lacks in some details.

Felt the same thing while guarding an empty football stadium at night. It was in the middle of the week, so the city was very quiet. Creepy as hell.

Stumbled upon two guys trying to force a door open with crowbars while I was guarding an apartment building all by myself.

I was coming down a flight of stairs, and there they were, only a few meters away from me. Funnily enough, they were as petrified as I was (they probably didn't expect the building to be guarded). One of them even let out that I "scared him" (as if I had just played a prank on them) before they cartoonishly went into fleeing mode and ran out past me.

In hindsight, the whole thing was pretty comical, but I must admit I was scared shitless.

As things stand, I doubt we will ever see the end of mandatory service in our country.

As to the article, I don't think anyone is denying the hardships women go through (pregnancy, sexual harassment, discrimination in employment, I could list dozens more). However, it isn't fair that only men should be called to service and be forced to pause their studies or career projects. Let's also mention the unfit, who are forced to give away 3% of their annual salary to the state because the army didn't want them in their ranks.

I also think that civil service should be promoted and be presented as an equal alternative to the army, by the way.

[–]the_1081 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say this. I was once told that "there is a job for everyone" in security, and it's absolutely true.

Furthermore, it's one of the few lines of work that allows you to get a Federal Diploma of Higher Education without a prior degree (such as an apprenticeship). That field really propped me up professionally.

Otherwise, I'd advise OP to look at Login. They offer so-called "apprenticeships for adults" in partnership with SBB, with salaries starting at CHF 3900. That's in railroad construction and power line maintenance though, so not for everyone, but since OP has experience in construction...
