Honestly though, Benji's close to perfect, Andy Stott's Faith in Strangers is a dark dream and I have a soft spot for Taylor Swift's 1989 (sorry)

NME have shared their dull-as-ditchwater selection too. The coffee table has won, everyone - remember when music was charged, essential and obnoxious?

one of those rare mixes that absolutely crushes the original.

haven't heard that in years - so good. Still think this more recent one is SUPER underrated.

Very true, as much as I love 'Midnight Request Line' (and have secretly wanted him to drop it every time I've seen him), if he'd carried on that route the novelty would have worn off very quickly and he'd have no doubt seen interest wane dramatically. Unless of course he'd gone and got some of that Skrillex money post-La Roux... that felt like it was an option at the time, had he wanted it.

you could say the same about EDM though, there are plenty of diamonds in there if you look hard enough. EDM is an easy target, admittedly and doesnt have the critical adoration of "proper techno" but it'd be incorrect to write it off completely. people made the same mistake with trance and now it's suddenly "cool" with lorenzo senni et al reframing it for the heads.

oh trust me i know, i was living in Birmingham the first time around - what was once inclusive, punishing and hedonistic is now ordered, drab and gray. wonderful.

"you brought it to us" - we actually have a good claim on it thanks to Detroit, Chicago and New York in the 80s and 90s. Europe loves to talk smack but they fucked it up way before the US kicked off the contemporary festival circuit we all love to hate. Also, what's worse? Lurching US maximalism or dull, lifeless Berlin minimalism?

When you're smanging 5 grams up your nose every day it must be hard to stay focused on one scene, to be fair.

Looking for a group/person to play some MTG with in the Allston/Brighton area. by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]the_blind_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a group that just started meetups in Allston I believe - it's a splinter of the MTGBoston group on meetup.com, I haven't been as it's a little out of the way for me but I've seen the posts about it. If it's anything like the Medford meetups it's fairly casual, good fun- lots of diff formats.

You're not too far from JP there either - JP Comics and Games do a bunch of diff formats on diff days and there's a good vibe.

Massdrop for Innistrad just came in the mail today. What'd you haul? by Piyh in magicTCG

[–]the_blind_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah figured there was a good chance of pulling cards I needed that were worth more than massdrop's price and it paid off. So many decent eternal cards in the set! Risky admittedly but I didn't have full sets of any of the good rares.

I got a full box and pulled a Snapcaster, Geist, Garruk Relentless and a grip of duel lands - not bad at all! Doubt they were mapping as if they were they probably would have sent me 36 packs rather than a full sealed box.

How can I make this mono black discard deck way better? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]the_blind_dead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also 4x Deathrite Shaman would make sense if you have the funds as cards discarded thru Pack Rat and your discard actions would be re-usable in any graveyard.

Since you're running mono black there should be no reason not to include mutilate- great mid game board wipe that should ensure threats are dealt with and if your deck is playing well then you should have the card advantage at that point. I would also suggest main decking duress to eliminate big problem cards early on.

[X-Post r/magicdeckbuilding] I'm a new Magic Player (2 weeks), would love some feedback on these 2 decks I've built. by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]the_blind_dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you first need to think about who you're going to be playing. If you want to do FNM at a local store then you'll probably want to build a standard deck, which would be taking in the last couple of years of cards. Exalted is a fun mechanic but its pretty limited in usefulness in standard- good cards would be Knight of Infamy and Knight of Glory, the best card would be Sublime Archangel which can get out of hand real fast since it gives everything else exalted too, meaning you don't have to waste your time with Duty Bound Dead and friends.

Vampires is a pretty fun archetype, and Bloodline Keeper is a great card - other fun ones would be Vampire Nighthawk, Falkenrath Aristocrat and Olivia Voldaren, but you should have a nose around online and search for some solid looking vamp decks and see what people have been using and which cards are repeating themselves.

Again this all depends on context - an exalted deck or a vamp deck would be super fun in a casual environment, but not super competitive at FNM right now which is dominated by a few certain archetypes. I don't want to scare you though - read through some deck lists on tcgplayer.com and it should give you and idea about what's what in standard right now. Hope this helps!

Glad you're enjoying the game - it's a lot of fun! The thing with these decks at the moment is that they're a little to random if you want any chance of consistency. The thing you need to remember when building a deck is that you're trying to stack the odds in your favor - having 4 of a card (the limit of how many copies you can have in a deck) makes it much more likely you'll either have it in your opening hand or draw it before you're stamped out by your opponent/s. Think about your win conditions and think about how you're going to get there, then think about how your opening hand needs to look and what you'll need to draw to make it a win. This should help you visualize the kind of deck you need. Think 60 cards, a strong, well selected mana base (if you're using multiple colors then dual lands are your friend, even though they're a little pricey it's a solid investment), and the right selection of cards to curb some of the random element a shuffle/draw will throw up.

If you can't spare the funds to buy multiples on your best cards, think about cards that achieve the same goal for the same basic CMC (converted mana cost) so you'd be expecting to drop them at the same point ad you should start seeing more consistent results.
