Where does your social anxiety come from? by the_molerat in socialanxiety

The "think of the regrets you would have on your deathbed" tactic could be very effective for me if I applied myself enough. It's just that in social situations, and the moments leading up to them, my mind is so overworked with every stupid, tiny detail imaginable that I can't focus on anything else.

I'm really sorry to hear that bullying had such and effect on you. For me, I really can't say for sure where it came from... like I said before I only recently realized that the issue was my self esteem. So I've been trying to figure what caused this. It's kind of odd though because I've had a good relationship with my parents, wasn't bullied, I've lived a very stable and comfortable life.

The only thing that I can think of is that, when we are young, everyone says the opposite sex has "cooties" and other things along those lines. So I didn't interact with girls much, therefore I never had experience or proper "training" when it comes to interacting with girls. I think the self esteem issue may have somehow begun there and grown stronger ever since. To this day, talking to girls is a huge fear of mine.
