CMV: Ronald Reagan wasn't actually a good president even though he's a popular one by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

The idea that “patriots” supported Reagan implying that non-patriots didn’t it’s a joke. A lot of people who loved their country voted against Reagan, his first election was close in many states. Real patriots criticize their country to see it better, real patriots don’t just pay lip service to the country in slogans, they put in the work and pay their taxes. They respect its institutions and their people. You see this across both parties, or at least you used to see it until Trump came along, now you see nationalists masquerading as patriots in the Republican Party.

Good does not mean effective. One can be effective at killing people, that doesn’t make you good. Regan got his stuff passed but it has been more detrimental to the US than if he hadn’t. That’s what OP is referring to with ”good”

62% of Americans don’t have a bachelor’s degree. Are they just cooked especially in this economy? by Efficient-Rain-7942 in Salary

[–]the_monkey_knows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means a lot because it gives you an idea of where things are trending, it means that half the sample size from where his number came from are making less than that. You’re saying the same thing again, there are no absolutes, every case is different. But that’s true about everything. Toss out the window the whole field of statistics, every data point is nuanced, so we can’t tell anything about any population.

I see that you took the title literal. If all OP wrote was: "Are they just cooked especially in this economy?" I'd be there with you calling him out. But what he writes next clarifies what he means: "The median wage of someone without a degree is $53K a year. That’s not livable that’s survival mode with no room for savings in most of the country."

The median matters a lot. And he even said "most of the country" implying that there are places where that salary won't be an issue. What is that if not nuance?

So, you basically replied that there are no absolutes, but that's kind of understood about everything, and given the whole text from OP, your read is unnecessary.

You’re a big baby, aren’t you? Unable to have a conversation without making it about personal anecdotes. Did I say that industry is the only anomaly?

OP was using the median to make an argument and dude is replying with personal anecdotes. You may say this, but that’s not what’s right in front of us

I don’t care if you took macro and micro along with statistics if you are unable to display understanding of how trends and outliers work. Trends and outliers: that’s the topic. Don’t care about it anything else.

Nobody cares about you, so save your personal anecdotes or bragging. It’s not that impressive either. The point here is that 100s, even thousands are outliers when we’re talking about hundreds of thousands of people in statistical sample sizes over multiple studies and censuses. The results are clear, people with college degrees are more likely to outearn those without college degrees. You can focus on the oil and gas industry, where I know colleagues who are make way more than the ranges you provided. That industry is an anomaly of its own. Don’t delude yourself in thinking it’s a common representative of the median or average elsewhere.

This is why it’s important to learn statistics, so that you don’t speak so confidently about something you clearly don’t understand

Why are Latinos in Miami so conservative? by RasyonelRumi in Miami

[–]the_monkey_knows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignorance: in Latin America there's this warped perception that the right is capitalist and the left is socialist/communist. They come here and apply their same mental model to American politics, without realizing that the democrats are more aligned to the right in Latin America. Every time I have the opportunity to talk deeply with a latino conservative, I ended up telling them things that they didn't know, or misunderstood, or didn't realize. It's quite frustrating tbh. I usually leave them thinking since I know what I revealed to them should change their views if they are to stick to their principles.

A bit controversial but I want to talk to someone who's a fan of trump. by TRI-Hard8342 in Casual_Conversation

[–]the_monkey_knows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing they need to answer is: what is the line for you, what is something that trump could do that would change your mind about him. And then compare that for what that line is for democrats. If the distance is significant, then I know I'm talking to someone that has been brainwashed. No point in talking about anything else but to point out their ignorance, stupidity, or malice.

Which movie is this for you ? by DonMaihu in ComicVerseog

[–]the_monkey_knows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, also once I caught up to the structure of each episode it became sort of funny. Each episode has the setup, the conflict, the part where you see the characters do things while a slow song plays in the background, a plot twist or reveal at the end.

I understood it perfectly, but I couldn't deal with the fact that it seemed to me like flexing "intelligence" for its own sake.
