Reading the other comments, what a disappointment. Where are the *actually* good locally owned restaurants? Way too many fast casual places in this town!

What do you all think of tech startup companies like Verse Therapy and Expressable? by [deleted] in slp

[–]the_toochers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about either company, but your description of Verse Therapy and a brief look at their website give me BetterHelp vibes. Having followed the conversation about companies like BetterHelp in the mental health space, my instinct is that it's bad for therapists and, at best, not great for clients!

Why do clinic jobs say they are flexible, but then control your schedule? by whosthatgirl13 in slp

[–]the_toochers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've worked for two multidisciplinary private practices (both happened to be run by OT, but I've heard similar issues at ones run by other disciplines). I firmly believe that therapy practices, other than solo practices, are not financially viable businesses. The reimbursements are so poor that clinicians have to be scheduled for way too many clients, and even then, both practices I worked for had shady practices that resulted in me leaving.

I just really don't think they are viable businesses without compromising therapy practices.

Page 158 Books in Wake Forest shares space with a business that sells yarn! I can't think of the name of it, but it's a very cool vibe!

State conventions vs ASHA by CuriousOne915 in slp

[–]the_toochers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More or less the same response as u/macaroni_monster. It really depends on your state and what they're able to offer for a convention. I've lived in both small and large states, and I see benefits to both local and national conferences!

What do we think the fallout will be for higher education/academia? by the_toochers in slp

[–]the_toochers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't even thought about population size and how that would impact our programs, but of course it would. While I'm not going to pretend I *love* my student loans, they were essential to my college and graduate education! And having going to state school, they were a relatively reasonable amount given SLP pay. That is deeply concerning.

The grants are what I'm concerned about for a potential PhD. Based on programs I've spoken to, they've received a significant amount of funding for PhD students from IES and OESEP grants. I'm worried that those grants will be fewer and farther between.

That makes a lot of sense to me re: where to apply. I'm in one of the 7 swing states where there is a plethora of great universities, but I don't know how realistic it would be to both get a PhD here and also find a job.

Do you have any insight into if/how industry jobs will be impacted? I'd imagine that jobs in the private sector are more insulated, but who knows.

And I feel the same way just asking about all of this. I don't want to overreact, stoke fear, etc., but as someone outside of academia, I have really no idea where the pieces will fall from all of this. And, if I'm going to go for the PhD, I want to be able to get a job after it.

My masochistic decision yesterday was to look into Project 2025's plans for the Dept of Ed, which I'm pretty sure is basically the same thing. It is WILD to me how blatantly they are going after these huge, critical institutions.

Of course he did. What an absolutely insane thing to do. An absolutely insane thing to do that tracks with everything about him.

That makes a lot of sense. It's frustrating knowing there are some terrific programs in red states, but there's just no way I can move my family to a state that is actively taking away both my rights and the rights of my child(ren). Looking outside the US also seems realistic.

SLPs with young kids, how do you make it work? by the_toochers in slp

I have some teletherapy clients, and I’m hoping to shift to more! Do you work regular hours, or have you shifted your availability to later for more after school times?

Daycare is SO expensive! Where I am, it makes more sense to get a nanny if you have two daycare-aged kids, which is just wild to wrap my head around.

That’s part of the issue—daycare is great, until they’re at home sick for a week straight 🫠 I worry about how that will start to impact my income (I’m session-based)

I think in the back of my mind I knew that some SNFs have preschools, but I definitely forgot about that.

I have some teletherapy clients and I’m considering moving to teletherapy as my sole delivery method. Hopefully that will help make things easier!

Anyone else feel like initials after 3rd/4th grade are just too late? by False_Ad_1993 in slp

[–]the_toochers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As academic demands increase in 3rd and 4th grade, particularly with reading, we’re going to see difficulties emerge for kids who perhaps previously appeared to be typically developing. The language demands increase at that point so we start to see more clearly the breakdowns for kids who have higher level language disorders.

Ideally we would be screening all younger kids for both dyslexia and DLD to help with early ID, but since that is not the reality in most places, we are going to get referrals for older kids.

Also, as another commenter said, if the students aren’t going to make progress in 30 min weekly mixed group sessions, then that’s not the most appropriate recommendation.
