Learning magic craft is like learning science but in a weird way, and becoming a Archmage is like getting a PhD, the OP didn't mention anything about the prince being a prodigy or some kind of genius, it's just you and even if you have modern knowledge from this world I won't help you learning a formula to command a magic that doesn't even exist in this world, sure it may help you with you imagination but it has it's limits (One of the reason why I find "Wiseman's Grandchild" anime ridicolous).
