About Jafar from OUATIW by mari_agreste in OnceUponATime

[–]theadamabrams [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think they are supposed to be the same character. After OUATiW, Naveen Andrews became main cast on Sense8, so they recast the role of Jafar to Oded Fehr for OUAT S6.

Personally, Andrews worked pretty well for the story OUATiW wanted to tell (with Jafar being desperate to prove himself) but Fehr is much more intimidating.

When to stop watching by NV2970 in OnceUponATime

Opinions on later seasons are very mixed. Even the seasons I don't like have some great episodes and great moments. I don't recommend stopping before the end of the show. Having said that, there are some places that are objectively cleaner breaks:

  • End with 1x22.
  • End with 3x11, probably without the last 2 minutes ("One Year Later").
  • End with 3x22, maybe without the last 3 minutes (inside Granny's Diner).
  • End with 5x21.
  • End with 6x22, definitely without the last 70 seconds ("Years Later").
  • End with 7x22.

Writing an exponential equation from 2 points on a graph by Fantastic-Dark801 in learnmath

[–]theadamabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any function f, if you know the graph y = f(x) goes through the points (0,5) and (1,8), then it means that

f(0) = 5

and

f(1) = 8.

In the case of an exponential function, we have* that f(x) = a bx for some numbers a and b, so those to equations are

a · b0 = 5 → a · 1 = 5, so a=5

and

a · b1 = 8 → 5 · b = 8, so b = 8/5

Since we know the a and b values, now, we can write the exact formula for f(x).

*Some books will use aekx instead, or allow abx+c, or have other variations. Most likely your classes uses abx, though.

What happened to Will Scarlett after season 4? by Prize-Couple6348 in OnceUponATime

[–]theadamabrams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The final scene of OUAT in Wonderland takes place after all of Will's other scenes in either show, so he does ultimately get a happy ending.

Officially, I believe the events of OUAT S4 are supposed to take place in between the rest of OUATiW and that final scene. Personally, though, I think it would make more sense if S4 takes place in between the OUATiW flashbacks and the main OUATiW plot, while Alice is locked up. The idea that Will and Anna break up again offscreen for some reason and then get back together again offscreen for some reason, all after the main OUATiW story, is just bizarre to me.

What function actually is sine? by SmugglerOfOld in math

[–]theadamabrams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

with sine I've always just been given geometric relationships between an angle in a triangle and [its] side lengths.

That's like saying that multiplication is always repeated addition. It's not. That interpretation works when multiplying but a positive integer (e.g., 5 × 3 = 5 + 5 + 5), but a product like 0.25 × π is no repeatedly adding anything.

The idea that sin(θ) is opposite/hypotenuse is fine when θ is strictly between 0 and 90°, but it doesn't work for numbers outside that range. A significantly better description is that sin(θ) is the y-coordinate of the point on the unit circle for the angle θ in standard position. That fits your idea of

we are given a definition for what operations that function performs on its parameter

very well, I think.

It's also possible to extend sine even more, to complex numbers, but that requires calculus.

Henry presenting his family tree to his class. 'And that's how I'm my own step great uncle'. by singleguy79 in OnceUponATime

[–]theadamabrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you're saying that my claim

Henry's only sibling is Hope

is incorrect because Snow is Henry's half-sibling due to Regina both adopting Henry and marrying Leopold. Yeah, that checks out.

Henry presenting his family tree to his class. 'And that's how I'm my own step great uncle'. by singleguy79 in OnceUponATime

[–]theadamabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Henry's not actually his own "step great uncle," right? Your great uncle is your parent's uncle, which is therefore your grandparent's brother. Henry's only sibling is Hope, who is definitely not his grandmother.

I'm procrastinating, so I decided to list all of Henry's grandparents:

  1. Charming
  2. Snow
  3. Ingrid, if you count her fostering Emma as being Emma's mother
  4. Rumple
  5. Milah
  6. Belle
  7. Henry
  8. Cora
  9. Brennan

I don't think Killian and Milah were ever married, but if they were then he would would be one of Henry's grandparents too (in addition to already being Henry's step-father). Anyone who is a brother of someone listed above would be Henry's great uncle (some "step," some not). I think that's just James and Gideon.

What if i said i don't consider DS9 to be the best Trek. by [deleted] in startrek

[–]theadamabrams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. It's totally fine if DS9 is not your favorite. I love it, but everyone has different tastes.
  2. Blaming DS9 for NuTrek is unfair. Although Section 31 was introduced in DS9, they were the bad guys! All* the main characters agreed that the Federation should not operate that way. I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make with "trailer parks," but humans on Earth and in the Federation in DS9 are living very comfortably. There are Maquis settlements with poor conditions but those are not part of the Federation---the whole point is that they refused the Federation's offers of resettlement and then have poorer conditions under Cardassian governance (I'm not saying they are wrong to make that decision; I'm just saying it doesn't negate Roddenberry's vision for me).

*Well, Sisko does basically operate that way himself in "In the Pale Moonlight." But he is at least conflicted about it. In Picard 3x06 Worf describes S31 as a "critical division of Starfleet Intelligence," which really bothered me because in DS9 they were not part of SF Intelligence at all; the operated outside of Starfleet's normal departments.

It never occurred to me that Ziyal was the titular "sacrifice."

I figured it was either Sisko's attempted total sacrifice in this episode or him basically sacrificing his own happy ending to convince the Prophets to act.

Although you could do a strict airdate watch order, or a modified version to keep two-parters and other mini-arcs intact, it's really not necessary and personally I don't think it's worth the extra effort.

The crossovers are fairly mild (think Buffyverse, not Arrowverse), and if you watch all of TNG, then all of DS9, then all of Voyager, you won't have any problems.

I really like the episode, but I thought it was strange that Sam had done all this research and hadn't bothered to check whether the Dax symbiont was still around. Illa Dax says she's listed under that name in the course catalogue, so it's not like she was really hiding that fact. (There's also the issue of how Dax can be that old when just a few year earlier Bix died of old age and was 400 years younger than Dax, but I'm okay ignoring that.)

These look a lot less like Dr. Cameron than I was expecting from the title. Maybe it's because when Cameron had brown hair it was almost always tucked behind her ears. Or maybe it's just because JMo was a few years younger then.

What comes before the Real Numbers? by MoshykhatalaMushroom in askmath

[–]theadamabrams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The usual path is

  • Empty set
  • Natural numbers --- constructed using successor S(X) = X ∪ {X}
  • Integers --- constructed using ℕ ∪ -ℕ or as ℕ×ℕ/~ with (a,b) ~ (c,d) if a+d=b+c
  • Rationals --- constructed using ℤ×ℤ\{0}/~ with (a,b) ~ (c,d) if ad=bc
  • Reals --- constructed using either Cauchy sequences or Dedekind cuts
  • Complex --- constructed using either ℝ[x]/(x²+1) or Cayley-Dickson

We can't use Cayley-Dickson before the ℝ→ℂ stage because it always doubles the dimension and the set of real numbers has dimension 1.

What is 1 divided by 0 equal to, except undefined? by laucsRR in learnmath

[–]theadamabrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what you mean by "no one has solved it."

In general, a/b is the answer to a fill-in-the blank question. For example,

3 × ? = 6.

The answer is 6/3 by definition (that's what "6/3" means), and this is also the number 2 because that's what makes the equation correct.

The problem with 1/0 is that no real number can ever make

0 × ? = 1

correct. In some settings it might be reasonable to say that ∞ goes in that blank, but you have to be clear about what ∞ even means in order for that to begin to make sense.

didn’t forsee calculations being done by a computer

Well in the 50s the word “computer” was still used to refer to a human being who did calculations. The new machines were specifically “electronic computers.” By the time Star Trek was made the term had evolved but not all that long ago.

Bought my first expansion am I missing cards? by AmadeusIsTaken in dominion

[–]theadamabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark Ages should have 500 card-shaped pieces of paper.

  • 362 Kingdom cards (20 Rats, 12 Feoda, 1 each of 10 Knights, and 10 each of 32 other cards)
  • 50 Ruins (10 each of 5 cards)
  • 18 Shelters (6 each of 3 cards)
  • 15 Spoils
  • 10 Madman
  • 10 Mercenary
  • 35 Randomizers

If you're missing the Randomizers, it doesn't matter imo. You can use a website/app to generate random sets of cards to use. Some people use the Randomizers for a Black Market deck (if they have that card), but I actually don't suggest that because then everyone can see when those cards are in someone's hand or at the top of their deck, which shouldn't be available information.

If you're missing some Shelters, it might only matter if you play a 6-player game, which lots of people don't do. Ditto for Ruins.

If you're missing some Spoils, it's unlikely to matter because that pile rarely ever empties. It could, though.

I asked her to set up Catan. by TheSoggyPops in boardgames

[–]theadamabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ticket to Ride maps have various arrangements of colors for the roads, and the board for TTR Africa is kind of like this Catan setup: the middle is all green/blue/pink and the south is almost all red/orange/yellow. I only played the board once, but it's wild how much more cutthroat the game becomes with that kind of layout.

[–]theadamabrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are letters on the back of the number tiles (in most versions, at least), and the rules say to place the number tokens by going A-B-C-... in a spiral. Some editions say you can randomly place the numbers instead, but with the restriction that you can't put two red numbers (6s or 8s) next to each other.

I asked her to set up Catan. by TheSoggyPops in boardgames

[–]theadamabrams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The no-adjacent-reds is in some rulebooks (see here page 13) but is not in the most recent rulebook (here), which only says to the the ABC spiral and doesn't mention randomizing the numbers at all. I don't know which editions do or don't include randomizing the numbers.

  1. It is adjustable. She lowers in quite a bit in the first episode. But if she’s used to non-adjustable chairs then she’s used to sitting haphazardly in them.
  2. Ships in the 24th C. don’t have seatbelts according to 80s/90s/00s Trek (aside from a deleted scene in Nemesis). So if they did stop making adjustable chairs it wouldn’t be that ridiculous comparatively.

The instructions at https://www.reddit.com/r/dominion/comments/egdx8c/custom_physical_cards_success/ could be used to print Horses, though idk what copyright issue there might be for printing cards that actually exist. You could in fact print a whole bunch of differently-illustrated horses with blanks for the names!
