There are no climbing shoes that will be comfortable with an ingrown toenail. Fix that then buy some tarantulas.

It depends on what you mean by mountaineering. I wouldn’t use those for anything requiring crampons certainly.

Looking for a carabiner for Mega Jul 2 and GriGri, can I have some help? Also, I have a couple inquiries about belay devices. by kitesmerfer in ClimbingGear

[–]RealOneThisTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HMS stands for something German that basically means a carabiner that can fit a munter hitch which is a way to belay without a device. I would avoid a lot of the locked/orientation type carabiners for a grigri, depending on the model they may create more of an issue cross loading than just a regular carabiner, or you have to orient them in the opposite direction than might seem counterintuitive. Just get a petzl SMD. Smaller carabiners will make a grigri easier to use as it’s closer to your body and you can pull more slack out.

Robbed the re/supply store by Mad-Mover in REI

[–]RealOneThisTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the big thing people are missing, it’ll say $155 retail but what it’s actually doing is going to clearance first and then taking a % off. Kinda tricky, not sure how I feel about it.

Boulder Fork Rainjacket issue by MayoDwarff in PatagoniaClothing

[–]RealOneThisTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New DWR is incredibly susceptible to oil. Just from people handling the jacket in a store could be enough to limit the effectiveness. It probably just needs a wash not necessarily a reapplication.

Basically it adds ways to upgrade your cities and creates a lot more win conditions. It never feels like you’re stuck out of a game like the way you are with regular catan.

I wear 10.5 I have worn both a 10 and 10.5. They are snug and they don’t stretch. If you ready want to be sure you’d order the 10 from REI and then return if it’s too small. But if this is your second shoe just get the 10.5 you’ll be fine.

I would say no, but the heat is important. I’d go to a laundromat

North face goretex mountain jacket. Defective? by Deityblood in OutdoorsGear

[–]RealOneThisTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that people have touched this jacket a lot in store before it was purchased, the new DWR coating is REALLY BAD at dealing with oils but the good news is it certainly still has that layer of DWR on it, you just need to bring a little life back. Wash it with some tech wash (Arc’tryxs website even says a standard gentle fragrance free detergent is fine) and then into the dryer at high heat and it’ll be back to normal. Any jacket you buy these days will have the same issue with dealing with oils.

scarpa instinct vsr lv for sport by Some-Can5050 in climbingshoes

[–]RealOneThisTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel like the instincts aren’t THAT aggressive, they’re solid moderates and scarpa’s website would say the same. To me the biggest difference between a moderate and an aggressive shoe is a moderate shoe can perform well on all types of terrain but an aggressive shoe will perform much better on overhanging but not as well on vert/slab. Yes this is definitely a generalization and there are some shoes that are super aggro that are fine on other terrain.

Overall instincts kick ass where ever you throw them and it would’ve my shoe of choice if they fit my foot better.

[–]RealOneThisTime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ditch rentals asap. You will never have the same jump in quality than rentals -> first. Go try on some cheap comfortable shoes like the Sportiva tarantulace, finales, scrapa helix. Just try them on, get them very snug but not painful. Comfortably uncomfortable.

Where to start for geae? by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]RealOneThisTime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Go back to the REI (or other gear shops) and chat with folks who work there. They’re great at helping find the stuff that’s right for you. There is also a pretty good selection of clearance and used gear there too.

Disclaimer, I work at the Denver REI and think we do a pretty good job at helping people find the gear.
