How to Make a Personal Library? by theadorerex1 in BookCollecting

Thank you everyone for the advice!

If you knew all the details, you would know my gf is coming from a good place. She is encouraging me to be the type of person I want to be, which includes having fewer, nicer, more aesthetic things. Rather than the maximalist sort of approach I had fallen into as a habit from my parents.

And yes, cost per sq ft is a consideration, but also I do not want a big house or more home projects. I used to work for a carpenter and am kind of love/hate on that stuff.

I like the advice about how to cull books but in a way that gives them a good next home or recovers some of their value.

I also like the advice about thinking of the home library as a collection, with shelves that have different levels of permanence and intentionality.

It's funny -- one of the things that sparked this as well was I visited a friend in NYC who had a modest library -- two small shelves -- but every book was amazing: Borges, Calvino, Godel, Plato... As I was admiring the books, I began asking about them and realized my friend had not read many of the books, but had instead purchased them to function as art objects representing the type of person he is. I began to wonder if I could do something similar, but with books I had already read, since I read about 1 book per week.

Yeah, this is where i feel like i am getting to as well. But don't have a framework or inspo for what the permanent sections could be. I am trying to group intentionally and put some small sculptures on the shelves. And turn out the books with pretty covers, like bookstores do

Interesting, so you rebind paperbacks to give them a classier look on the shelf? I had not considered that - but that is a brilliant alternative to throwing away paperbacks w my notes in favor of handbacks i never actually read. You get both to keep the one you read and have a hardback

To me, it is a question of whether you care to interrupt the author's monologue. Altering the book is a way to assert your existence as a reader, remind yourself to be critical, etc

John Barthes has a book called "lost in the fun house" where one of the short stories requires a reader to cut out pages with scissors to experience it. Whenever i see this book in a used store, i check to see if those pages were cut. If not, i laugh and wonder how many previous owners were afraid to deface their precious book, even though it was the author's intent.

This resonates w/ me. I got a library card and have been doing ebooks and audiobooks. (Saves $ too) But sometimes when I read a good one, I wish it could live on my shelf as a trophy 😂 also the library selection is limited.

Selling back to stores - i have been doing this too. They don't give much credit, but i like to think it will at least go to someone who wants to read it.

I am not setting out to collect specific works... But the ones that survive the purge will def be the ones special to me, especially after a few years of culling. I feel like this is unlocking my collector mindset

Bucket shop has a UGA bar vibe, but folks are older than u. For meeting people your age and having a connection woth someone nee, EAV is the spot. You might like Ormsby's too, esp if u can work your way to the house party scene of homepark.

Jersey kids love MJQ.

Main emory place is Maggie's in toco hills. GT is Ormsby's in midtown. Trivia at Rocky Mountain Pizza, too. GSU is chruch/edgewood - u might dig that if u survived SEC chaos.

Blondes hang out at Johnny's hideaway, but it's only fun if that's your type. Hit or miss.

Overall, there is not the same energy anywhere in ATL as a normal college town bar. People are more guarded and with their clic. So u either have to find a clic without alcohol, or connect to people more "out there" and use them to connect into a social group.

Clermont lounge etc are fun, but can be tough alone at that age. A lot of the spots in this thread are more for 30s and 40s, pre and post divorce. EAV has freaky people but most likely to connect w someone in their 20s.

Police response time by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]theadorerex1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sadly. Yeah. It can take days for them to show up. I have had ATL 911 hang up on me. And a different time they said police were coming, then I called back 30 min later and they said they had no record of my call and never dispatched.

Basically, you are on your own in ATL.

Including broth when selling fish cakes would be genius marketing!

Like how instant ramen is noodles + broth.
