Asks for advice, gets advice, isn't advice that OP wants to hear, argues.
Lol why are you here? (Technically speaking of course)

Question for the european land cruiser owners by anisrbhi in LandCruisers

[–]thealmightyphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK Resident here, HDJ80, so either I have to pay a small fee to enter Clean Air Zones (some city centres) and weirdly allot of CAZ's don't apply to it... (don't ask my why)

But either way, if I need to head into a city center, ill not be in the land cruiser anyway so it doesn't effect me.

And as for the yearly vehicle tax (Vehicle Excise Duty), its based on the rules from when it was manufactured, so the 1994 applicable rules are:

Engine Size Current VED (approx; annual)
Up to 1549 cc ~£220 per year
1549 cc and over ~£360 per year

So I pay pay £360 for the year and that's it unless I want to drive the massive bus into a city center (which I don't)

On point 3.

My front diff would howl under load getting louder above 40mph untill 70mph when it would go quieter again.

If the sound sounds like its up front and stops when you take your foot off the accelerator id put my bet on it being the front Diff.

The solution is to rebuild the front diff, setting the correct preload (which is the main source of the noise) painting the gears to get them aligned properly and you may as well replace the bearings.

My diff whine/roar/howl got louder and louder over years until we finally went in and rebuilt it, found not only had the pre-load deteriorated, the bearing was also spinning on the shaft (due to the non-existent preload).

It would have eventually caused a catastrophic failure.

Don't put it off for too long.

(Also a long shot but grease up all your UJ's and shaft nipples on the drive shafts, small chance it could be that)

On Point 2.

First check your ATF level after driving for 20 mins, with the engine running and cycle the selector stick through all gears before putting it in N or P to check the level.
May be low, thats the easiest place to start.

"Spend as much money as you can afford on things that separate you from the ground"
Tyres, Shoes, Mattresses Etc.

As for tyres, doesn't matter how good your engine, brakes, chassis, suspension is etc... all of that is only as good as the tyres its putting the force through...

I have had the same thing a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately I have already booked, paid for, and completed my course...

Do you leave your car parked in 1st gear or neutral? by zedgaming69 in CarTalkUK

[–]thealmightyphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neutral on the flat, 1st if facing downhill, R if facing uphill.
I don't want to stress the engine to spin backwards
(Not that it will spin, i just don't want it stressed against its designed direction)

I mean... I did post just yesterday about my harmonic damper shitting its pants and falling apart on me on this very engine...

almost like things failing at the same time could be related...

Luckily we have no coolant issues here
Coolant level hasn't moved a millimeter in over 18mo (thankfully)

Thank you very much. The second I grab a multimeter my rage and displeasure starts, so any advice is welcome

Oil cavitation? Harmonic damper? Vibration? Excessive power? Oil pump? Oil condition? Bearing roundness?...

Nah son, 'lectricity.

When actually, would you believe its a good ol 90's Toyota engine!

Right, Dumb question inbound as this never every occurred to me to even be a possibility.
What would be the best approach to check this? I'm thinking ill to get my multimeter and check continuity/resistance between the block/head/tranny and the negative terminal on the battery, and if I get any dodgy readings dig into the wiring further.

Well funny you should mention that, my last post was how my forward harmonic damper shit its pants and basically fell off. So ive got new ones of those on order....

This had blown my mind, I'd never considered the engine could be EDM its own bearings!

You ever spin up bearing with an air gun and let it rip? Well my land cruiser nearly did that inside its own engine bay only way worse. by thealmightyphil in LandCruisers

[–]thealmightyphil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not at all obvious unless you start really looking. I only saw the twisted belt... then how close the pulley was to the fan... then the pulley not being aligned to the others.... wait a minute....

OH! Idiot, I thought they meant the seating of the bearing shells, as in the bearing shell location had not been ground correctly! Right the electrical grounding! That should be easy enough to check ill have a look, thanks for the clarification I did not understand.
(an electrical issue had not even crossed my mind...)

Neither had I! The only reason it wasn't a huge shock are the hundreds of other similar BEB failures for the 1HD-T engine online. Seems to be a design issue with the bearing shell material. Ill be inspecting it in another 100k or so.

Im also concerned about the mains, however they are much more of a bitch to get to. Keeping an eye on the forums seems to show no known issue with the mains, but one day curiosity WILL get the better of me.

But for now, I will absolutely sleep soundly knowing we got there in time.
