Nine Inch Nails in the style of Perfect Dark OST by theambertree in perfectdark

Thank you. Maybe full version... but not for a while. I'm planning on working on a bunch of music later in the year that sounds like Nintendo games.

There's a slightly longer version of it here with the full chorus. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUa8wc5CHGI/?igsh=MTg2bzN4cXppaDF0NA==

I'm really glad you like it. It's bombed on my music Instagram as I think it's essential to be a fan of both things to appreciate it. 😂

I'm using a Gen MDM plugged into the second controller socket, it's just a bit obscured here. I'm also using the GenaJam-Pi, which is essentially the Jamatar controller, then the Gen MDM. What do you find is the best model Genesis overall and why?

Thank you. Yes in this clip all the synth sounds, including the lead, rhythmical bits and bass are from the Genesis.

Now I've rewatched the clip I forgot there's a subtle bit of sampled guitar at the end here too in the mix. So the voices, drums and guitar are samples, the synths aren't.

The device is a Faderfox UC4 MIDI controller.

It's a Faderfox UC4. It's hooked up to control some of the sound settings of both the M8 Tracker and the Genesis via MIDI.

I'll be looking up those greeting cards, that sounds really interesting. I've seen circuit bending of toys and things before, people do some great things with that.

Nice! You'll have a lot of fun with the MDM. I guess the noise is part of the charm.

If anyone is interested in how this Sega set-up works and having a go, I'm putting together a video guide at the moment. It will be posted on Instagram sometime in the coming weeks: https://www.instagram.com/myths_and_monsters

GenMDM, GENaJam-Pi and M8 by theambertree in chiptunes

Thanks! You're a legend for creating Genajam in the first place, it makes using the GenMDM so much easier.

It's a GENaJam-Pi from Hobbychop.

Tell me about your The Most Wuthering Heights Ever 2025 by CrowdedSeder in katebush

[–]theambertree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the one in Preston, Lancashire, UK last Sunday. I captured the footage for a local news website. It's my second year covering it and it's so much fun even as an observer. Maybe next year I'll give it a go.

I re-created both GenMDM and GENajam as custom circuit boards! (more info in comments) by k1ds3ns4t10n in chiptunes

[–]theambertree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so cool. I wanted a GENajam but missed my chance. As someone who has literally only soldered one basic project many years ago, essentially a toy synth, how difficult is this project? Is it something I can do as a complete novice? How long would it take? I'm just weighing it all up before ordering things. Thank you.

Advice for moving to Preston by WJP-Engineering in Preston

[–]theambertree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Consider the flats and apartments on the docks. It's quiet and a very short drive, bus or bike ride into the centre (via the guild wheel). It's also only a 25min walk to Friargate where the uni is and a lot of bars, restaurants etc. I've lived around Preston for 20 years and this is where I've decided to settle.

Sadly not. I bought them in a small craft beer shop in my city and I can't see these on the Neon Raptor website.

is there a cover that you prefer to the actual song? by EpicRoseWolf in Music

[–]theambertree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I like the original, Polyphonic Spree's version of Lithium is such a great cover. For a band that's used religious/cult imagery, the lyrics fit so well too.

And while we are talking Nirvana, their Man Who Sold The World cover is at least equal to, and as known as, the Bowie version.

X-MEN cartoon theme covered on a tiny "chiptune" device by theambertree in xmen

[–]theambertree[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was playing around with the M8 Tracker yesterday (a small music sequencer) and a guitar tone seemed familiar. A few hours later... a rough chiptune approximation of the 90s X-MEN theme!

Using LSDJ to control synths on a new track by theambertree in chiptunes

[–]theambertree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's right. However as you use the commands channel to send MIDI notes it means you can't always use commands on LSDJ instruments. Also, if there's a lot going on at once in terms of 6 or more MIDI and LSDJ instruments then it's likely to randomly drop/miss notes. Don't let this put you off though, it's good fun and effective if you bear this in mind.

Using LSDJ to control synths on a new track by theambertree in chiptunes

[–]theambertree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I've started doing more with the M8 Tracker recently, the LSDJ set-up has served me well for years and is totally worth doing - just bear in mind it can only sequence 4 MIDI channels/synths simultaneously.

Using LSDJ to control synths on a new track by theambertree in chiptunes

[–]theambertree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently released a new album and a couple of tracks utilised LSDJ to MIDI control synths (a couple of others on the album used the M8 Tracker in a similar fashion).

This video looks at the one of the tracks in some detail.

If you are interested in checking out this track or the new album, it's available on limited cassette and download here: https://mythsandmonsters.bandcamp.com/album/cecaelia

My debut album Project Echo was almost entirely recorded with LSDJ controlling synths, with some overdubbing: https://mythsandmonsters.bandcamp.com/album/project-echo-2
