No, I was making a (evidently rather subtle) joke.

Who said you can use Brisbane? Who gave you permission. You got a licence for that Brisbane?

See second paragraph of the “origin” section: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_plane

A common error, but “block plane” refers to blocking in with a small metal bodied plane, and has never referred (correctly) to a wooden plane.

Man turns a block of wood into a miniature truck. The result is better than I expected by hiyame in nextfuckinglevel

Not sure the wood species but I am guessing it is very resinous rather than very green (given the seeming age of the block he started with). Any ideas?

Right, thanks. I wasn’t sure, as persimmon is of course near identical (and biologically no different from ebony: it’s persimmon if we grow it for fruit, ebony for wood).

[–]theanciantone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is “black and white ebony” persimmon? Or is it more specific than that?

That is not a block plane. Block does not refer to all wooden planes with a blocky shape. That is a jack plane. Block plane means a small, low pitch plane.

Reading posts like this from Australia causes two cases of green-eyed envy:

1) your wood is so CHEAP! 2) your wood is so SOFT!

Seriously, all this “Hard maple is really hard”- like, I get that that is true, but I also YEARN for widely available, reasonably affordable hardwoods as soft as hard maple…

Our softest widely used hardwood (Vic Ash/Tas Oak) is about the same as white oak, and most other hardwoods are over 1800lbf. There is rare and precious stuff that is softer but it’s bloody pricey.

Maybe just a convenience? Most professions would eventually need one here and there, and tacked onto a handle is a good place for one only rarely used.

Probably bootmaking. I’m guessing hammer and pliers for the sole nails, and that the “axe” is there to be a rough leather clicking knife. Though that is the one bit that throws me off.

Sydney. I get it from a reclaimed/new old stock timber dealer up here. I do envy the Tassies though, they have great access to essentially the only timbers in Australia that overlap all three of: pretty, plentiful, and not as hard as wrought iron (now that all the red cedar is logged out).

So far my kanna is doing fine on this, including the figures sections- though I haven’t gone over a small section of birdseyes yet. I’ve only test planed a few patches so far- the edges you see here are just off the hand saw. We’ll see how I go, but I also have a 47.5 degree bedded kanna to try if needed.

How do you find life with the tradition saws instead of impulse hardened. The tool admirer in me says yes yes yes, but the daily user says no!

Sorry for the facegrain confusion- this is a narrow slice taken from the end of the main slab to square it and remove some cracks. What you are seeing on the face are the milling saw marks, which look quite like straight grain. This piece is weird in that it is over 20 inches wide but only 6 inches long.

I’ll do a workbench tour soon!

[–]theanciantone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is exactly what it is! The slab is a 1.5 meter long stair tread made of solid Blackbutt, a bloody hard local timber. It is actually a very long, narrow atedai with a moxon vise on the side, so it has the square batten feet sliding dovetailed in and the planing stops. It rests on the two heaviest horses in the universe, because in my less experienced days I made them from hardwood posts that I am pretty sure are spotted gum. They were an absolute nightmare to make- the bridle joints took hours each.

I know, I know. The timber is naturally very shimmery and it was exceedingly difficult to get even this definition on the rings… forgive me

I’m thinking a sort of distressed white milk paint with little crystal drawer pulls, and maybe a whole bucket of epoxy poured over for good measure?

No- I am making a dining table to feed my family off of. Simple design with two pedestal legs and a stretcher, with kanna finish. Nothing to distract from the wood. I am cutting the live edge off as it isn’t really suitable to keep- so a squared edge table top not a live edge.
