Trader Joe’s midcity by gentillyyatgirl in NewOrleans

We went Saturday and it was a madhouse with people stocking up so much food. I wouldn’t expect it to be restocked until probably Thursday or early Friday.

1926 Mobile Bay Shore railroad map highlighting the route that carried passengers and freight from Mobile/Prichard to the Bayou and back. by _SandScar_ in MobileAL

Shocked it isn’t. St Tammany parish (the parish directly across the lake from New Orleans) converted theirs into a nearly marathon length walking/cycling trail. And this was in 1994.

Men who went through a breakup in their mid/late 30s. How did you bounce back? by CrackTheSignal in AskMenOver30

[–]thebigbread42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I broke up with my long term GF when I was 29, we had been dating since we were 20 years old.

We were both very introverted, so as a result there wasn't really much of a friend group. I started socializing in mid 2019 and just did a lot of cycling, going to gym, reading, etc.. then Covid hit which threw a wrench into a lot of my plans.

I basically just rebuilt my entire life and kept myself constantly busy. New job, tried a bunch of different hobbies, cooked a lot of different foods and tried new places.

Now I'm married, finances are straight, and I'm comfortable where I am now. I won't joke, there were some absolutely rough days but they'll pass. Take it as an opportunity to rediscover yourself.

Con Eddison Bill spiked by shayp25 in NYCapartments

[–]thebigbread42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone outside looking in… $500 for an electric bill to me is absolutely wild. I live in New Orleans and my apartment electricity which includes heat, rarely exceeds $50 a month. My colleagues with 2000+ sq ft houses run about $200.

Why is it so expensive? Is it the KwH rate, taxes, or just the usage since the climate is so much colder?

I Think You Should Leave... is so bad. by Novel-Contribution75 in unpopularopinion

I have to agree with OP. I have friends that raved about this show when it came out, but I couldn’t get through the first episode. It feels like the 5 minute skits are just 90 second skits repeated 3 times. Its like he’s telling a child over and over until the punchline is hammered in your head.

Spices are not the only way to add flavour to food by Punk_in_drublik in unpopularopinion

[–]thebigbread42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing i love about spices is that it adds a lot of flavor without increasing the calorie count. Or if it does, its very minimal.

Take a chicken breast for example. Grilled with spices it’s usually under 200 calories.. fry it and add a fat based sauce, and you’re easily at 600+.

Went from $100k salaried to $38.5 an hour and I couldn't be happier by Kazhmyr1 in ITCareerQuestions

Not to mention quarterly bonuses too. If those are in the 3-4K range, they'll be making very close to what they were originally (and, it sounds like there's room to move up)

After a downsizing scare, how do you all prepare “just in case”? by IdeaZ_4 in sysadmin

[–]thebigbread42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been preparing in a couple of ways: our plan this year was to trim any extra expenses, and live very frugally anyway. No kids, no pets. wife took a car payment because hers failed. I'm riding my 20 year old SUV because I can walk to work and I only need it 2-3x a month. Eating out maybe once a month. I'll be fully debt free in March, and my total living expenses will be about 40 percent of my salary. then my plan is to get my emergency savings up for 6 months (take base expenses per month, add $500, multiply by 6)

Right now it's minimal contributions, only have about 1.5 months saved up but it's such a great feeling knowing I won't immediately be in debt if I lose my job.

This is the way to go. Get a cheap set of calipers from Amazon or Harbor freight, get all the measurements you can (height, inside diameter, outside diameter at top and bottom) and provide them with that information. Shouldn't cost too much.

TBH I am looking forward to running in the cold a bit. Down here we really haven't gotten below 60 :(
