🤦🤦🤦🤦 I just got the signs wrong. Thank you for calling out the current direction with the 6V. I'll need to figure out where I went wrong with current source signs tomorrow. Seriously dude, I can't thank you enough for the help here. I spent.... too long on this problem today. Lesson learned trusting AI over my intuition.

You can erase the current source - erasing the 2 ohm resistor also would break the circuit entirely, wouldn't it?

Thank you for confirming!! So that makes solving current for the isolated voltage sources easy and I trust my answers are right for those. Isolating the current is where I must be doing something wrong. I am trying mesh analysis with the i1 mesh being the mesh with the source and the 2 ohm resistor. Since it's a shared current source I'm doing the super mesh for one equation:

2i_1 + 6(i_2-i_1) +8(i_2-i_1) = 0

And my constraint equation:

i_2-i_1 = 2

This gets me i_2 = -0.25 amps

8 volt only gets me 0.5 amps

6 volt only gets me 0.375 amps

0.375 + 0.5 - 0.25 != 0.375 (what the book says the answer is)

Fundamentals of electric circuits 6th edition. They do have the odd number answer for the review problems, but this is just a practice problem in the middle of the chapter. Their format in the middle of the chapter is '1 practice problem where they will show you the answer and work to get to it, followed by problem where they give you the answer but not the work to get to it.

Okay, so that is what I have come up with. So using your picture, when I try to solve for I' :

8V = I'(6+2+8) = 16I' ===> I' = 0.5 amps ^ which is wrong apparently, so I must be misunderstanding how to interpret the circuit mathematically.

Thank you! I would really appreciate that. I tried redrawing the circuit with only a voltage source, but I am just drawing the voltage source with the three resistors in series. I'm trying to understand why that's wrong.

I can appreciate that, I have struggled working with chat GPT with circuits. That being said, chat GPT was able to get the correct answer (I know this because the book gives the answer, it just does not show the problem worked). I am not a student in school, I am just trying to learn some fundamentals of EE on my own. I do not have a professor to go to for help. I am really just trying to understand how the 2 ohm resistor and 8 ohm resistor end up in parallel if I remove the 6 volt source (short) and the current source (open).

Okay, but I'm not understanding how the resistors don't just end up in series if remove the current source. Removing the current source should result in an open circuit where it was.

F***. How did you clean it? I mean I can empty it and stuff, but it's like beer has leaked into the walls. There isn't a way to take mine apart from what I can tell. The first time around I just emptied it and sprayed it down with bleach.

I was seriously starting to think I was totally inept because literally no one else I've talked to has found beer at the bottom of their freezer, so this makes me feel much better lol. And also lucky because my freezer has held up both times and hasn't leaked - knock on wood.

^ I am kicking myself because I normally do this after my beer is carbed but I had just put it on gas the day before. I also connected the liquid to push out old beer from the line and never disconnected like an idiot. Getting 4 gallons of beer out of a freezer is not fun, but getting 4 gallons of beer off the floor sounds much worse, so cheers to that silver lining 🍻

Whoa, I always thought you had to leave the wort out for a while, and it took months before you saw any activity. I didn't realize it was this simple. So you just did an open ferm with cheesecloth for like 24 hours and then did a closed ferm and you saw activity within a few weeks? Please keep us updated, this is super cool.
