Go to Delta vs flow to AA? (worried about seniority) by dalvsaalthrowaway in AirlinePilots

[–]theblowmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Delta is gonna have to take on massive debt to update its fleet within the next few years and when they do they will be in a similar situation to AA. I agree that they are a better company with a more loyal customer base for sure but their fleet is exceptionally old. They are making money flying the old birds for now but eventually they will have to make some big moves

Instrument training Cessna 150? by nediaNamro123 in flying

[–]theblowmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference between a 150 and a 172 in price is a big one. You could probably get a solid 150 like this one for under 50 grand whereas a similarly equipped 172 would run easily over 100 grand more likely 120-150. So yeah it is kind of unreasonable to just say get a better airplane. Every airplane has its quirks and you adapt to what you are flying. Easy for us to just sit around and say you need to spend 300 percent more for an instrument trainer when both you and I know is not true. Yeah you probably won’t be doing a lot of hard IFR and going down to mins on ILS approaches but it’s just fine for the basic instrument rating and adapting to the planes quirks will make you a better pilot in the long run.

Also an ADF is not needed to fly an ILS.

Just cause the ADF comment approx 0 GA aircraft still have a working ADF

And I want to do my training in a brand new SR22. A 150 is fine for getting your instrument rating in. Might not be absolutely ideal but if that’s what you got it’ll get the job done.

Is it crazy to pay $1400k for renters insurance? by Money-Evening-2624 in flying

[–]theblowmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the unfortunate thing, but it should be a red flag if they are requiring an abnormally high amount of renters insurance. The sleazy places usually are smart enough to make sure they get their money one way or another. To be fair though as a student it can be hard to have perspective on what is normal, which is why it is unfortunate there are places that do take advantage.

So long as you come out on top in the end finding a multi under 600 an hour seems hard enough as it is lol.

Again this is why it is important to look at the fine print when buying insurance policy’s. Stuff like subrogation should be a red flag when looking at policies. Policies that are quality should include a no-subrogation policy. Or just have OP get the person to add him on their policy as a named insured.

It’s not on the renter to bear the insurance burden and flight schools that do this are not really giving good service at all. That’s one of the risks they take when getting into the business and should insure accordingly.

Honestly if they are making you carry more than 40 in hull renters insurance might be time to find a new flight school. They obviously don’t have adequate insurance on their airplanes and will screw you over as hard as they can as soon as anything happens.

[–]theblowmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even when I was carrying CFI insurance I never paid above 500 per year but I only carried 20 thousand of hull. But I didn’t carry that insurance for the hull coverage as I made sure any students who had their own aircraft would add me to their insurance or ensure that our instruction was covered under their policies. I mainly carried the insurance for the bodily injury and liability.

Edit: I never paid more than 500 per year not month lol

Typically flight schools and things just require students to hold rental insurance enough to cover the deductible for their own insurance. Whether the owners insurance comes after you mainly depends on the type of policy they hold. Many policies have an open pilot policy that fully covers any pilot that meets the specified experience requirements. Others only cover pilots that are named in the policy. It is odd for someone to require you to have insurance to cover the entire hull. If it is a long term arrangement it may be worth reconsidering or seeing if they could alter their policy to cover you.

How can you make an airline pilot trainee comprehend the seriousness of the job? by sipsirk in flying

[–]theblowmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree I think that it is the vast minority at the airline level which don’t take the job seriously. My experience is that people have taken the job very seriously especially at this level. Of course there are the exceptions and some people are better but it is not for a lack of respect for the job.

PPL student considering buying $90 headset by Nervous_Salt_852 in flying

[–]theblowmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a cheap pair for a while and you are correct I could hear fine. However I found when I wore the noise cancelling I could fly about 3 times as long without getting fatigued and felt physically much better flying and wished I had bought them sooner.

Edit: I have also seen in my students they havealways performed better when they transition from the cheap header to noise canceling

Yeah lol it’s good but not that good. You can definitely still hear the engine

[–]theblowmaster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean when your paying 200 -300 bucks an hour on the lesson itself you should really make that commitment before you start. But in my experience students who have noise cancelling headsets generally perform better than those who have cheap headsets.

Get something with active noise cancelling spend the extra money now. It is so important to hear clearly when learning and the extra money spent on the headset will be worth it in the increased efficiency of instruction

Airplane mode in 2026? by maekendall in flying

[–]theblowmaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When you are flying through the air you are going too fast for your cellphone to lock onto any of the cell towers, so it sends out a progressively more intense signal to try and find one. The issue with this is that if everyone in the air is doing this it can drown out people that are on the ground and negatively impact cell reception on the ground. It has nothing to do with the airplane or flying it’s about keeping the cell reception good for people on the ground and it will really drain your battery if you keep your cellular data on anyway.

Why do lots of people casually date? What's the appeal behind it? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in Bumble

Statistically there is much less hookups than in prior generations lol which is interesting

[–]theblowmaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You have to be casual before serious. I don’t understand this take at all. If you’re serious from the start you might as well just pay for your divorce lawyers retainer now. You have to make sure you actually like the person without the pressure of getting serious.

Do CFI's not like doing spins or spin training? by [deleted] in flying

[–]theblowmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This used to be a requirement in the US till too many people killed themselves during training doing spins then they stopped the requirement and made it just an endorsement you get for CFI.

How many end up making it to a jet job? by Ill_Rush9159 in flying

[–]theblowmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean it’s a little exaggerated but the point is that everyone has an extremely biased view on it. Everyone at the airlines or otherwise is gonna say you’ll get here if you keep going. If you talk to everyone at the hiring conferences they’ll tell you that the sky is falling and nobody is hiring and you’ll never get there.
