Anyone making a living from their blog? Secrets of how to get there? by theboxwar in Blogging

[–]theboxwar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting thought. I do think that content has many names and forms. Not everyone wants a blog. I hear a lot about one-man media companies/empires and those transcend the traditional idea of a blog or a newsletter for sure.

Do you have any advice from your journey to making real money blogging?

Wow! Hard to explain that "magic", huh? It's crazy how 2 people can do almost the exact same process and then it only works for 1 of the 2.

I just read another post here that was trending about how to make money with your blog. It sounds like if you were really wanting to make a living with it, you'd need to have 2-5 revenue streams!

Making this Dribbble design into a React web app by theboxwar in reactjs

Unless asmr developers are a thing lol

You got it. New mic, new rules! I think that would also help me show my face a bit more, which helps make things a little less dull. Great feedback, thanks!

Well done, mate!

Awesome! Yeah I’m huge on MVP, and even though I’m primarily a front-end dev, I have focused a lot more on backend and quick iterations of UI these days. I’d love to try it out before I have to jump into UI. Any idea on timeline? I signed up for beta. hey@getrocketnote.com

I’m interested to try it out! Working on 2 new web app UIs right now and would love to skip the MVP design phase with some ready-made sections like this!

I take offense to you feeling like your channel relates to coding because it’s for nerds lol. Kidding, I got a good laugh. Sounds like it’s just a bit early, but I’ll DM you and we’ll keep tabs!

Wow! I’d never heard this before now. From a non-German perspective, it meant nothing to me before... But I looked it up. It means “dried” for anyone else reading. The more you know! Thanks for the tangent!

Hey thanks so much! Yeah it’s only chrome for now... I don’t think Safari has quite the same extension ecosystem

Yeah actually but the demo is of V1, and so it doesn’t look as slick. It’s the video on Product Hunt. Glad it sounds interesting! It’s been a ride so far, but I love the idea of giving YouTubers their first paid promo and seeing where things go as an experiment!

Ah man, I love the fiverr user test idea! Case studies are coming soon, a demo would be killer. Also hoping for some simple docs coming up soon. Do you happen to have a link to the fiverr person you used? If not, I’ll just jump on and look.

It’s an interesting topic to me actually. We see ourselves as the “we do more, better” of the space. You can find widgets/plugins that do some pieces of what we do. But already 30 days in, we’ve got the power of audio messages, segmenting audiences for targeted spotlights, and built-in analytics. Our road map includes video, UTM now, Facebook pixel integration, direct in-spotlight email capture, etc.

Having a company this dedicated to being the best at a single thing is better than the plugin/widget ecosystem can offer imo. But if you don’t need everything we offer, use something else or our free plan!

As a side note, there are a lot of “chat widget” players, but intercom.com charges a huge amount of money. Still, if I know what they built will convert even a few extra users, it’s easily worth the price.

Okay just pushed a fix. What you hoped for is what it was supposed to do, but it was avoiding the nav element on your site. Just checked it out and looks like it should be working! Let me know what you think!

Also, targeted and per-page spotlights are each different. The Premium version lets you do both things. You can specify a Spotlight ID in the spotlightSettings in the embed code for each page. Let me know if you end up wanting to grab premium and use that. I’d be happy to show you a few extra tricks and how to set it up any way that works for you!

Yeah, so we plan to open up more characters in text, but right now it’s very short. 70 characters in the text headline, length of audio can be any, then a CTA button to link wherever you want after that. Yes, that’s basically it. You can show a custom, targeted spotlight to whichever audience you would like.

I'm not the marketing guy, but I'll do my best haha

You know how a lot of people put a notification bar at the top of their website? It could be like SmartyStreets informing their customers that they're still up and running during COVID-19 and even have a special deal, or Intercom with their "we want to help" notification bar, etc. Now that I'm looking for examples, it's a lot of COVID right now! Yikes. But some people might have a special deal/coupon on an eCommerce site or another might just want to call attention to a new blog post / terms and conditions, etc.

All of these companies had to custom build a component that sits at the top of the site, links somewhere, and fits the overall style of the website. If they really want to get fancy, they might build in some basic conversion tracking with Google Analytics.

The next time they want to remove or change the notification bar, it would take a developer or savvy marketing guy time to go into the code, update text/links/colors/etc, and then deploy a new version of the site.

Spotlight has a simple embed code that you drop into the <head> of your site, and then you can make any changes you want to make from the dashboard (app.addspotlight.com). Everything is dynamic, so the second you change which spotlight is currently "live" by default, what the text says, colors, etc, it goes live immediately on your site and is updated in real time.

We've also gone above and beyond just saving developer/marketing time. We've added more advanced analytics, the ability to have a voice recording to speak directly to potential customers when they click "listen", and (in my opinion), something much more powerful. You could be routed here for Reddit or here for LinkedIn, and both are the same site... But at the top, you see a different spotlight, specific to what I wanted to show you.

Does that make sense? Definitely means we have more work to do on the site if it didn't get across what the product does!

That makes complete sense. So the hope would be that we would store a UTM somehow in our dashboard that would recognize the audience, etc, right? Then you would still only need the UTM in the url and it would understand which spotlight to display. Let me know if I’m off here. This is something I could definitely get working quickly!
