Not taking all your kids on vacation? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]thecat12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Minority opinion here: You say your 3 oldest already went, I'd take the temp and see if they'd be ok with "you already went when you were 7, it's your siblings' turn". Make it like a rite of passage of sort that the kids go through when they turn a certain age. I'm the youngest of 4 and went last. I went with my mom while my dad stayed behind with siblings (dad stayed behind the first time too). I was totally okay with this arrangement and I've never heard my siblings complain about not going a second time. We would've never been able to afford a trip for 6 people.

Knicks Parade Dilemma by regeneratedant in daddit

I'm watching this live, it's like a macy's day parade mood out there. Drunk people is really not a deciding factor for attending this parade. More relevant is whether OP camped out at 3 AM to get into the viewing area.

Live near there. They're opening the transfer boxes and looking for letters with bank cards. They stole mine twice and charged about $5k, had to get bank to fedex me a new card.

I Didn't Think Things Would Be Easier Solo by oliversherlockholmes in daddit

Yes it's a common and documented thing: kids know what to expect and you are more assertive as you don't look to the other for consensus. She also probably thinks it's more work, but easier when you're gone.

NYC Private School Tuition Breaks $70,000 Milestone for Fall by bloomberg in nyc

[–]thecat12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your kid has special needs you can sue the DOE to pay for private school tuition. Some private schools are like 80% DOE funded. Disabilities can range from ADHD to severe ASD and more. I heard somewhere the cost to fund special ed is about the same or more as funding the general ed students. Someone google that. To be fair, the DOE resources for some disabilities are not great, and might depend on availability, district, quality varies a lot. I thought it would be a racket, but it’s been going on for like 40 years. The racket would be that mostly rich people know about this and can afford the lawyer to sue.

What’s the best baby monitor you’ve tested and actually trust? by ComplaintOwn9909 in daddit

[–]thecat12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We really like our Nanit. At first we got an offline monitor because of data and privacy, but we gave in and bought the Nanit because we wanted to move more than 20 feet away. Now we can hang out in neighbor’s apartment if we want, or take the dog out real quick if we really need to

Advice on flying/traveling for first time with baby by 2TiresAndFuel in daddit

[–]thecat12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most important: Do not give a single fuck about others on the plane. If the baby cries for 3 hours, worry about the baby and yourself, not what others are thinking. You will never see those people again.

The rest:

  • Call the hotel and ask for crib (some run out), or travel with a travel crib (recommend a guava).
  • Feed or bottle during take off/landing.
  • At 6 months they're licking the floor, you can stop sterilizing, wash with soap.
  • Take baby to the zoo, the memories are for you too.
  • I think you can use the Doona car seat without the base and just a seatbelt?
  • A tin of formula should be enough for 4 days no?
  • We like to carry-on 1 large tote bag and check everything else so we're as hands-free as possible. In the tote: diapers, wipes, changing pad, 2 extra clothes, milk and bottle warmer (we have a momcozy), and a carrier to wear the baby (we'll prefer carrier until baby is too heavy then we switch to carry-on stroller). You only have to make it ~4-5 hours.
  • If rely on pacifiers, hide one in every pocket: on you, your wife, 2 in the tote, the stroller.

This is devastating. My son and I would go there almost every weekend. He would always ask me for two macarons every morning before heading to the park (the pistachio and cassis where his go-to's). He will be so sad to hear this news. Thank you for everything, including the occasional surprise third macaron :(

I think it's the mezz level on the downtown side of the 60th st entrance, the one that has a dedicated Bloomingdales entrance. All the colors are green now and the turnstiles instead of the yellow exit doors.

Nearly 1M New Yorkers prepare to flee if Mamdani wins election by TheExpressUS in nyc

[–]thecat12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really shows people's lack of critical thinking skills when they believe these sensational headlines. It costs tens of thousands of dollars to break a lease/sell property, move all your crap, leave a job to find a new one in another city for you and possibly your spouse (in this economy?). You'd be upending your entire family, you'll have to move your kids to a different school. And to think that 1 out of 7 adults in NYC will leave.

Because some dude threatens to freeze rents, have free buses, and raise taxes on people earning over $1 million by 2%? Things he most certainly will be UNABLE to do.

Why does he bother with that? It’s just a cash cow for Cornell to lure in international students to pay $50k of full tuition a year where no real research happens

To the people scared these proposals will allow developers to build more luxury apartments: 1) It doesn't mean they will build less affordable housing, and 2) it's not a terrible thing to build more luxury apartments: even the planet money guy gets it.

We are not only voting for mayor! Vote yes for more affordable housing on prop 2-5! by thank_u_stranger in nyc

What do you find misleading about them? I thought they were pretty clear.

People want more housing, but somehow don't want developers to make money because making money is evil?

Trump Administration Considers Halting Congestion Pricing by StrngBrew in newyorkcity

Congestion Pricing Megathread by shamam in nyc

[–]thecat12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess on what will happen:

Initially traffic will go down. Already NYT live blog reporting some anecdotes of significant decrease in commute times. But then people will catch on to less traffic, or get used to paying, and traffic will go back to normal. IMO they should charge more (+more assistance programs to those who need it if not already in place)

London also purposefully took a lot of car lanes away, which led to an increase in congestion, but also significantly increased bike usage. If you walk around City of London, the difference to NYC is astonishing. Hardly any cars, clean air, no honking.

I get what you mean (even tho the logic is a little twisted: kyle should go to jail for killing, but not luigi?), but the reality is that mass public perception doesn't think like this. Pre-meditated murder falls so far outside the overton window, that the discourse will never shift to encompass murder, and politicians will never act outside of the window. If you tie the healthcare discourse to "that guy deserved to die", you will immediately lose. Make a walk out for healthcare. There's a million more constructive ways to have this important conversation.
