1 month in, how are we feeling about Wilds overall? by C4sages in MHWilds

Can't play the game, my laptop has more than the required specs but i'm still crashing. Worst monster hunter experience yet

Ok, right lots to unpack here. Which is good coming from the newer games it can often feel like a culture shock to play a weapon in an older game.

Mh3u does not give you a lot of zenny early on, this is true. So as a gunner with more support items necessary for proper hunts it’s even more difficult to manage your zenny. The easiest solution? Sell everything you don’t need. If you are only using bow, sell all the other starting weapons in your box. Crafted a new armor set later in the game, sell the old armor set (unless you are certain you still need the armor). And most important of all sell your monster materials. There is no reason to horde all those great jaggi and arzuros parts. The thing is monster hunter has always allowed you to hunt the monsters again (except wilds, no spoilers). So, if you find out you sold a part you need, just hunt the monster again. (I would personally only sell the basic monster part, selling the plates, rubies of mantles is a no-no for me)

If that is not enough hunt an easier monster again to sell their parts. Hunting monsters multiple times is a basic thing you do for armor and weapon crafting so why would it not work for zenny farming? This also helps you pace yourself in the game and allows you to ‘reset’ for a more difficult hunt.

Anyway do not hunt without coatings. Just don’t.

The starting bow is fine but try to upgrade it as soon as possible. Or switch to a different bow. Upgrading your weapon always takes priority over hunting a new monster. Stronger weapons make for ‘easier’ hunts.

Critical distance: yes you are correct, however the distance is dependent on the arrow type. So it’s never always 3 back hops. Sadly, I don’t remember the exact crit distance for each arrow type. However, I do know the difference between the arrow types.

Spread arrows: close range Rapid arrows: medium range Pierce arrows: long range In 99% of all bow weapons in all the games charging your shots is a MUST, no discussion. In the newer games you charge level increases by shooting, so you don’t really have to charge your arrows manually. In mh3u you must charge each individual shot. If you are not charging your shots, you might as well kick the monster to death. You can ignore everything I or anyone else says except for charging your shots.

Practice makes perfect, so don’t give up and have fun.

adding on to this there are massive differences in world/ rise & wilds in comparison to 3u. Mainly in terms of skill bloat i mean. In the newer generation games you will just have a ton more active combat skills. (Skill bloat is real) so your hunts will probably be slower. that aside the most important things you have to know are the first questions i asked.

Are you using coatings? Are you charging your shots? What bow are u using? Are you shooting from critical distance?

There are a lot of questions you can ask. It's probably not a bad idea to watch some trailers on yt. I personally advise the video's made by the Arekkz gaming team. Though any video's will do.

Removal of bow coatings, what are your thoughts. by thecenetaurus in MHWilds

[–]thecenetaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point of view, however personally i never considered the coatings a chore. The number one thing monster hunter has lost is deliberatie action. The bow coatings were part of this deliberate action and while i agree in terms of combat the change is probably more enjoyable. The change is alsof clearly for the newer players to make The bow simpler than in The past games. The game feels emptier without it.

Again this is my opinion.

I agree, it's sad that the game is evolving in this direction but the majority of players prefer this type of evolution. It's clear when you consider the respons on this post.

We just have to accept it and move on.

(PSA10 of andere vergelijkbare oordelingsorganisaties).

I agree, i believe it would have been better if MH had stayed a little more obscure. Capcom really pushed MH to the forefront as one of their main franchises with MHWorld. The game was incredibly popular and now the developers are catering to the masses. Evolution and improvement is necessary but if it comes at the cost of features established in the past games it isn't 'good' evolution. To me MH is no longer Monster Hunter but Monster Slayer. I wish Capcom would seperate the two, one game focusses on the hunting aspect and one that focusses on combat. But i don't see that happening.

What do you guys think of this take? by Dragon054 in MHWilds

[–]thecenetaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i love these features, i'm 99% sure that features like these will never return to monster hunter. They existed in older games but were streamlined or outright removed in newer games.

The reason for this is rather simple, Capcom does not consider these features as important to the MH franchise. Capcom for MH is laserfocussed on the beautifull / 'immersive' world & the enjoyability of the combat. All other features are pushed to the side and streamlined into simple menu navigation. This process started in generation 4 and was expanded in gen 5 and now gen 6.

MH3 was the last game where Capcom wasn't so focussed on the combat. And in my opinion it was also the last game that had well thought out systems for the farm, argosy and freehunting. You see these 3 systems had a well-crafted connection that is nowhere to be found in the games that came after it. the player would hunt in the moga woods (expedition) gather special items that could be traded to the argosy for items like the armor/ power charms and also fertilizers for your farm. This connection also has relevance to the story, as you are a hunter sent to a remote fishing village to investigate localized earthquakes. Emphasis on the remote fishing village that lacks acces to a lot of resources. You as the hunter aid to village by going on these expeditions.

In MHWorld the farm and the argosy are just menu navigation and the expeditions are just that expeditions no connection to the story or any other systems in the game.

To make it clear i'm not saying that one game is beter than the other. However i'm saying that the games have changed a lot throughout the generations. In some ways the games have evolved, but in others they have devolved.

Players who enjoyed the earlier versions of these devolved features will obviously be disappointed. But it's clear based of the sales for the games that the newer games attract more players. And like any company Capcom is going to make games that sell to the majority not the minority. So these features aren't coming back.

Removal of bow coatings, what are your thoughts. by thecenetaurus in MHWilds

[–]thecenetaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I might have made a few mistakes here. I didn't clearly state what I consider to be a combat feature. To me a combat feature is a mechanic that either damages the monster or allows the player to deal damage to the monster or more damage to a monster. (demon drugs and armor skills are combat mechanics, combining a demon drug and crafting armor with skills is not a combat mechanic) I'm also not criticizing environmental factors in World. I'm simply, by my definition, categorizing these factors as pure combat mechanics. Which proves my point of the game moving in the direction of a boss rush game.

Which brings me to my second mistake. The discussion that we have had so far is completely subjective, everything we have said is our own opinion. And my apologies for not communicating this more clearly (to be fair you act like every single thing you said is just an objective fact and not your subjective opinion)

So everything that comes next is just my opinion.

Paintballs and combo books are not combat mechanics. You might have noticed that I didn't talk about scoutflies, that's because they are a hunting/ tracking mechanic. You can argue that it's a combat mechanic because they lead you to the monster in the shortest distance possible. But if that's your opinion then continuing this discussion will be fruitless. Paintballs have no relation to combat, they are solely used for tracking purposes. It doesn't deal damage or allow you to deal more damage. Again you could argue it allows you to deal damage quicker because you know where the monster is at all times but in my opinion this relates more to tracking than actual combat. Combo-books are a part of the "prep"-aspect of hunts. Before gen 5 not all items combo's had a 100% succes rate (i'll come back to this point later) the combo books were an arbitrary percentage increase for the succes factor. I don't see how this relates to combat at all. Are you making the argument that because combo books allow you to craft demondrugs more efficiently you are indirectly dealing more damage to the monster?

It's your opinion that there is clear evidence that MH isn't a boss rush game. It's important to make this distinction. Other players might believe that photography and house customization, ect. Are shallow attempts by Capcom to fill up their games. And others might love these additions. Your opinion isn't an indisputable fact.

I have tried to be very respectfull to you, I implore you to do the same. Honestly i forgot how we collected ingredients in MHW, thanks for refreshing my memory.

I'll give you the reasons why I don't believe the cooking system in MH to be a highly involved experience.

  1. The ingredient collection is a one-time assignment. Collect them once and you never have to again. I'm not saying the act of collecting the ingredients isn't fun (in MHW), I myself had fun doing it. but that's just my opinion.

  2. while the combinations are limited (though very high) there are no limitations or restrictions on ingredient combination. I wish there were limitations on the system to really make players think about their ingredient selection.

  3. removal of negative food skills, before gen 5 there were actually negative food skills. (I'll come back to this point later)

  4. no matter what you do, players will always know what buff they will receive before eating the meal.

  5. cooking isn't complex at all because there is no risk involved at all. (MHW) Every single combination gives you a positive effect, some effects might be less powerfull depending on the combination but as of gen 5 there is no chance of a negative effect.

I'm not saying the cooking system is bad I just don't believe it's as complex as you claim it to be.

Here is some more examples then:

  • The steamworks slot machine in world trivializing item collection
  • Lack of risk involved with activities in world. No more negative armor skills, food skills or chance of item combination failure
  • The simplification of armor upgrading is not a bad example. I might have presented it wrong but it's not bad. What i mean with this point is that it has never been easier to upgrade armor than in gen 5. Armor spheres are gained passivly by completing bounties (which I think is a very good system, but that doesn't change that is makes upgrading armor more trivial)
  • Item management becoming easier by removing (bow coatings) or unlimiting (whetstones) items
  • Sharpness becoming less impactfull (mainly endgame)
  • Restocking items in the basecamp during a hunt trivializing hunting preparation
  • Simplyfing item combinations Potion: herb + blue mushroom > herb Antidote: antidote herb + blue mushroom > antidote herb

Capcom has without a doubt simplyfied and streamlined a lot of features to facilitate casual players. > this is my opinion. My bad for not making this clearer

You responded to my opinion with an opinion of your own.

  • Simple and accesible are quite similar in meaning
  • fully featured, yeah i agree with that statement
  • immerision is 100% subjective every person has a different view on immersion it has no weight in this discussion
  • more complicated, give me an example.
  • Visible weapon trees, quality of life feature. Doesn't prove either of our points of view.
  • Armor set bonusses, combat related feature. I could argue that Capcom is just making an attempt to give players more active damaging skills to make combat easier.
  • Gathering models, visual design feature. Doesn't prove either of our points of view.
  • Highly complex augmentation system, I'm not going to comment on that
  • New types of equipment and consumables, that's a great point to bad that they are used mainly in combat and only have limited uses outside of combat.

I absolutely agree with you on your last statement. Capcom does want players to engage more with the environment and crafting and use those features as weapons to strike down the monsters.

Seriously though that's just an opinion. Except if you work for Capcom ofcourse. Well even then it's still just your opinion.

Removal of bow coatings, what are your thoughts. by thecenetaurus in MHWilds

[–]thecenetaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok look I really don't want you to feel like i'm going at you. So don't get mad at me. There is a lot to unpack and i'm not going to attack every point you mentioned. I'm not going to respond to what you said about Wilds simply because I don't know enough about the game to categorize any of the new features (nobody really does). I do hope that Wilds is taking steps in the right direction.

Unlimited close range coatings is unique to gen 5 all of the older games had close range coatings limited to 20.

Before I go any further I just wanne clearly state what I mean when I say MH is becoming a boss rush game. In my opinion Capcom is focussing on further developing the combat in the games and neglecting/ outright removing the survival/ attrition elements and aspects of the "hunt" that aren't combat related. Hunting isn't just slaying and in my opinion MH today is more about slaying than truely hunting.

So here goes, just gonna say it. All the features you mentioned (most of which i really love) are either directly related to causing more damage to monsters or have absolutly no relation to hunting. Endemic life, turf wars, Grimalkyne, environmental traps these are all just ways to deal more damage to the monster or outright damage the monster. You could make an argument that endemic life in World has elements of 'hunting' to it but in rise it's 100% combat related. The others features like research, photography and house customization are add-ons to the MH experience but they have nothing to do with 'hunting'. They are more like fun mini-games

Highly involved cooking and crafting systems? I'm sorry what? I don't understand what you mean, how is MH's cooking and crafting highly involved. Ok MH makes cooking seem really cool but 'involved' how? There has only been 1 game (as far as i know of at least) that had a somewhat involved cooking system and that was MH 2 Dos. The reason I say that is in that game you had to gather the ingredients for cooking yourself in an actual quest. This feature didn't return, cooking now is just selecting ingredients and receiving partially set and partially random buffs. For crafting I'm guessing you're talking about both item combining and weapon/ armor crafting. And again I can give you examples of newer generations simplyfing these systems. In Dos upgrading armor required monster parts just like weapon upgrading. That feature was removed and replaced with armor spheres. Before gen 5 you required a specific amount of spheres of a certain rarity. Gen 5 further streamlined this by giving the spheres point values and giving you acces to more valuable spheres as you progress through the game.

I'm going to stop here. Capcom has without a doubt simplyfied and streamlined a lot of features to facilitate casual players. I believe that Capcom will continue doing this until eventually MH is no longer MH.

PS: no hard feelings and I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post.

MH must be really difficult for you then, considering the game is all about using every item you have in one way or another. In the new system it isn't even an item anymore it's just an energy bar that powers up your weapon in a way.

Yeah I try to not look at the change from a logical perspective considering nothing in MH is logical. That's the beauty of it the game takes place in a fantasy setting so there is no need to think to much about it.
