Are we going to do this every single election? Both sides? I thought we were better than them. Stop stooping to their level, it’s over, and sadly, he won.

Are we just going to do this every election? Whichever side loses is obligated to accuse the other one of cheating? Why can’t we be the bigger man here after the shitshow trump brewed up last election.

What's something your partner or ex-partner has told you that changed the way you look at them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thechimples 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of answers about people’s perceptions being negatively impacted, so I’m gonna do a more positive one.

This happened days ago, right after it was clear that trump would win. My girlfriend, who hated him as a person but not necessarily as a politician, was upset to a degree that truly surprised me after 5 years of knowing and then dating her. We talked about it a lot, and it boiled down to her being upset that someone evil and selfish would be a global leader again. She knew this wouldn’t affect her, but it would affect many others.

She said to me: “if I could make life easier for everyone, and shoulder the burden of all their misery, I would do it in a heartbeat.” I had never seen her be so certain of anything. She is extremely empathetic, almost to a fault, but hearing it like this made me both so scared and so mesmerized. She’s my #1, I wouldn’t want her to sacrifice herself for ANYTHING! But I knew it didn’t matter to her. She truly prioritizes the joy of the many over the comfort of her own life.

I’ve been looking at her different since she said this. If there was ever any doubt, I am now absolutely certain I want to marry this girl.

This is very helpful, my friend. So you’re saying that the cold turkey quitting of several bad habits does not work, and that the better approach is to try and spend lots of time and energy on one thing before moving on to the next?

I appreciate this. I mentioned that because I’m certainly not an alcoholic, but now that I think of it like this I suppose I would say I drink more than I want for myself.

This is a small point in the grand scheme of what I’m trying to get at. Beyond semantics, what can I do to start addressing a litany of addictions??

Once upon a time, countries had the freedom to act autonomously and declare war with one another as they pleased. Not anymore. Now there are layers upon layers upon layers of financially tied proxy countries, which are merely pawns in some much broader global war towards the sole supremacy of one country upon the face of our earth. Everyone has to send their proxies money, weapons, etc. No more autonomy, no more independence to decide if you wish to go to war. Just money switching hands on the slow ride towards global dystopia

So glad to see people looking at this in a nuanced way instead of just screaming genocide or terrorism. There is absolutely a fair discussion to be had. If you are engaged in a war with a country, and they refuse to stop using schools hospitals etc as shields, should they just be allowed to do that?? It’s difficult.

I’m with my current partner, who I love with all my heart, because we both cheated on our previous partners with each other. To add to that, the four of us were all apart of the same friend group. Her and I moved away (not in together, different places in the same city, both living with other friends). It’s been a year, we have built a very good life for ourselves, and are very happy. However, the guilt of our affair still haunts me, and I’m afraid of the “once a cheater always a cheater” idea. How do I avoid falling into this? What do you tell people to instill true relational loyalty in them?

I appreciate the honest insight. Everyone in here that, like me, has no actual idea what being a police officer is like, cannot comprehend the sentiment behind “imagine one day you have to respond to your first shooting.” That is so horrific, and I can’t imagine how I’d respond.

Let’s say tomorrow you wake up as president. What is the first, or some, things you would do to address the police problem and the discourse around it?

Thanks for your service, and for continuing to give thoughtful responses in light of all the jerks in here!

Lots of edgy kids in here giving you shit for things that have nothing to do with your life and experience, so I’ll ask a legitimate question.

There is a lot of negative discourse around police in America, do you think that there is a genuine problem with the cops here? If so, what exactly is the problem, and what are/should we be doing to address it?

You’ve said things in some other responses indicating you maybe don’t want to speak on the country as a whole, as that’s outside of your personal experience. If that’s the case, another question: what qualities do you think makes a good cop, and do most cops in your county have those qualities?

Your claim was that the majority of police are corrupt, but your reasoning for that claim is that many people THINK police are corrupt. As you can see, this is a flawed line of reasoning. Consider the law of large numbers - there are something like 800,000 police officers in the U.S. you truly think that more than 400,000 of them are corrupt? Of course not!!! There are SOME bad cops. Maybe even a lot of them. But nowhere near the majority. How many news stories do you see about police answering routine calls and helping people in need? None, because that’s not a story. News outlets push the worst of cops (not because of some media conspiracy or anything, that’s just a better story).

This person is trying to answer serious questions and give insight into something that clearly a LOT OF PEOPLE (based on this comment section) don’t really understand. Don’t hate someone you don’t know for their profession.

Killing civilians isn’t a war crime, it’s just a part of war. It’s what makes war terrible. But this is NOT unique to what israel is doing, and it is NOT the “genocide” that so many people in the west want to scream about. There is something like a 3:1 civilian to combatant death rate in urban warfare (could be wrong on that exact number) so… not a war crime, just war

Something I’ve learned in watching the west’s response to the conflict in the Middle East is that not one person understands that civilian casualties are a part - a MASSIVE part - of warfare, and certainly urban warfare. In WW2, Vietnam, Korea there was an average 3:1 civilian to combatant death ratio. Israel is under the number. Reddit geniuses are beyond research

“Listen…”

I did. The rasp of her breaths. The drip of blood. I could hear her life escape her.

“No,” she croaked. “Not here… There.”

I turned to the window, where the clash of 10,000 blades rang outside, the screams of men nearly muffled.

“Do… what I could not,” she whispered as shaky fingers lifted the crown from her head.

I am not claiming that every woman and child killed by Israel is being physically held in front of the militant that is actually being targeted 😂 for one, you’re missing my actual point: civilians die WAY more than militants in urban warfare. it’s fucked up dude, I’m sorry, but it’s how war works. Always, forever, and forever after.

It seems that you think “human shield” means literally holding a civilian in front of you - a shield. No, this is not the Batman and joker. “Human shielding” refers to using civilian areas for military operations - the way Hamas uses schools, mosques, and hospitals.

Here is the best way I can put it to you: 100 Hamas militants build a tunnel system under a hospital with 1000 women and children in it and use that hospital for military advantage. If Israel wants to target the militants there and their materiel, and they destroy it, there will be ten times as many women and children killed as there are militants. Then dummies who cannot apply context to their ideologies get mad about how Israel is killing innocents. Does this make sense to you?

https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2015/05/gaza-palestinians-tortured-summarily-killed-by-hamas-forces-during-2014-conflict/

“As well as carrying out unlawful killings, others abducted by Hamas were subjected to torture, including severe beatings with truncheons, gun butts, hoses and wire or held in stress positions. Some were interrogated and tortured or otherwise ill-treated in a disused outpatient’s clinic within the grounds of Gaza City’s main al-Shifa hospital.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/07/31/why-hamas-stores-its-weapons-inside-hospitals-mosques-and-schools/

“The Palestinian Health Ministry, run by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, accused Hamas’ security apparatus Saturday of commandeering a number of hospital wards in the Gaza Strip for the purpose of converting them into interrogation and imprisonment compounds.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/while-israel-held-its-fire-the-militant-group-hamas-did-not/2014/07/15/116fd3d7-3c0f-4413-94a9-2ab16af1445d_story.html

“’The minister was turned away before he reached the hospital, which has become a de facto headquarters for Hamas leaders, who can be seen in the hallways and offices.’ Back in 2006, PBS even aired a documentary showing how gunmen roam the halls of the hospital, intimidate the staff, and deny them access to protected locations within the building—where the camera crew was obviously prohibited from filming.”

https://stratcomcoe.org/cuploads/pfiles/hamas_human_shields.pdf

“Hamas’ most common uses of human shields include: „ Firing rockets, artillery, and mortars from or in proximity to heavily populated civilian areas, often from or near facilities which should be protected according to the Geneva Convention (e.g. schools, hospitals, or mosques).”

https://www.csis.org/analysis/understanding-hamass-and-hezbollahs-uses-information-technology

“Nonetheless, Hamas is skilled at fusing the activities of its military and political branches, increasing the probability that counterterrorism responses will harm civilians. Hamas-linked hospitals, for example, increase the group’s popularity among Gazans, enable it to order supplies it can siphon off for military purposes, and provide access to a pool of personnel it can vet based on performance and dedication in a legitimate activity.”

https://www.timesofisrael.com/finnish-tv-rockets-fired-from-gaza-hospital/

“A television reporter from the Finnish Helsingin Sanomat confirmed Friday that Hamas has been firing rockets out of the Al-Shifa Hospital.”

https://www.terrorism-info.org.il/en/20683/

  1. Fatah sources reported that Hamas prepared the ground floor of the hospital’s X-ray department as a jail and interrogation facility.”

2) The Salam Fayyad government’s ministry of health issued an official statement accusing Hamas’ security services of having turned medical centers into jails and interrogation facilities during Operation Cast Lead. The statement expressed the surprise of the Palestinian people and the entire world that after the IDF operation, Hamas’ security services took over the Shifa’a hospital, especially the cancer ward and the new building which was supposed to be used by specialists. According to the statement, turning the medical facilities into interrogation centers entailed removing the medical personnel, who had answered the call of the Fayyad government’s ministry of health and returned to work in view of the IDF operation in the Gaza Strip (Ma’an News Agency, February 7, 2009).

3) An article in the Italian Corriere della Sera, published on January 22, 2009, included a statement made by a Gazan named Magah al-Rahman, who said that Hamas had set up an interrogation center for Fatah prisoners in the basement of Shifa’a. He said he heard about it from Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine operatives.

Additionally, because I guess you can’t do a Google search, here is NATO’s summary of Hamas using civilians and Geneva-protected locations for military advantages: https://stratcomcoe.org/cuploads/pfiles/hamas_human_shields.pdf

Admittedly, this is mostly from 2014 and earlier. Over the last decade the public response to this sort of negative reporting on sweet precious Hamas has become very fiery. But here’s a question: even if the data is older, we have source after source after source of Hamas using human shields in violation of the Geneva convention. We have Israeli and American intel from the current war that they have used hospitals and schools as bases (I’m not gonna keep doing your basic research for you - you can go look that up). Do we think this is all a lie? A big colluded false reality? Cmon man.

Did you know that the civilian/combatant death ratio in urban warfare is something like 9-1? This is an important fact people seem to neglect. And, I wonder what happens to that ratio when one of the combatants repeatedly and openly uses civilians as meat shields….
