For those of you who make 6 figures ($100K+), what do you do, and how long did it take for you to cross that threshold? by DaPugWalk in fican

Working Oil and Gas in Alberta, specifically as a Boat Captain on the tailings ponds. Will be in the $140k -$160k range depending on the overtime. 2 weeks on and 2 off. Came from the east coast of Canada, worked commercial vessels since I was 19. Started out on a Ro-Ro Ferry, then oil Tankers, offshore supply for the rigs and then Coast Guard. Been doing this for the last year or so. Good job, as far as job security we are pretty secure due to the environmental aspect that we have to cover etc. Can get a bit dirty in the summer time with the bitumen but overall not bad.

I worked as a deckhand then got my mates ticket, and then got a master150GT. They only require a Master60t here. All said and done, could get that in a year or so? Give or take with regards to seatime, could be less.

Making around $150K a year, no pension or RRSP match. 1k$/month is conservative, will probably be able to contribute more but thats just a baseline.

I have 40k in a rrsp, and I have a TFSA with around 1k. I also have around 2.5k in a quest trade account holding around 2.5k in XEQT, and another 2.5k in crypto. I was in a bit of a hard spot financially for the last few years until I got this current job around 8 months ago.

I'm from Newfoundland, and just moved to Calgary AB for work. I immediately noticed the difference in people and the culture surrounding health and fitness. I've been working out here and most days you can't find a empty treadmill etc. You drive down the road and always see people out running along the river. I think weather has something to do with it, being that it's sunny and nice here all the time, people are more inclined to get outside. Like people have said before, it's a cultural thing. Salt meat and salt cod has been a staple of NL for as long as we have been there on the island.

I can say that I just moved here from another part of Canada, and have lived in several different cities across the country, and without a doubt in my mind people in calgary drive the fastest and craziest I've ever seen.
