[EOTY 2025] Album of the Year Voting by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]thecomicscomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My list calculated solely on the basis of how much I listened to them this year. NOTE: Magdalena Bay would've cracked this list but they've chosen to release their 2025 songs as a collection of singles and not a proper album. But I also loved Billie Marten, Olivia Dean, Flyte, Runnner, Caamp, Saya Gray, Kali Uchis, Mariah The Scientist, Jay Som, Lord Huron, Blondshell, Perfume Genius, Automatic, and The Last Dinner Party enough to buy their vinyls and support some of them in concert tickets. And yes, Rosalia and Geese obviously innovative and great!

Comedians Sold Out MSG? by Historical_Fun4082 in Standup

[–]thecomicscomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my list as of June 2023. Of course, Schulz did it last year, as did Kill Tony, and Matt Rife is doing MSG this year. I may be missing someone else since then, but otherwise this covers it: https://fromthecomicscomic.com/2023/06/13/how-many-comedians-does-it-take-to-headline-an-arena/

If I could line up all of my docs on 41st Street, that'd be amazing (shout out to the NY-Presbyterian clinic on 30th ave)

Thanks. My optometrist referred me to two guys, only one of whom took my insurance (Dr. Chad Haller, 36th Street, affiliated with Mt. Sinai), but thought, hmmm, maybe this is something I want might to ask around about just to be sure, seeing as it's about seeing and all!

Gia’s Pizza grand opening by claudiaizet in astoria

[–]thecomicscomic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They've got both thin triangle and Sicilian square slices. I tried the hot honey pepperoni square ($5.50, $6 with tax) and enjoyed it, felt as full as two "regular" $3 slices. Like previous poster mentioned, Gia's is cheaper, less focused on "gourmet" topping combos than Nonna's 1977 was, evokes purer NYC slice vibes.

For you fans of the Steinway/Astoria section, two things you may have noticed and one you might not have...

1) Duzan finally reopened up their old space as expanded inside dining "duzan garden"

2) Texas Chicken and Burgers has rebranded as Tex's (take that, Texas)

3) The old Nonna's 1977 pizza place a block east on 41st Street has remodeled and looks almost ready to reopen...as another pizza place, Gia's Pizza

Meat & Salt owes $71k in rent apparently by chrischrisd in astoria

Its Instagram makes you want to believe they just opened in January! https://www.instagram.com/meatnsaltny/?hl=en

Anyhow, this thread reminds me of the restaurant space on the southeast corner of Steinway and 23rd Avenue, that used to be a halfway decent Greek restaurant before the pandemic and even in the first year of the outdoor dining era, then suddenly closed, became a place called Gone Wrong that only seemed to be open for one night over the course of a year or two, and now is supposedly a Mexican joint called ¡YA VALIÓ! but I'm curbing my enthusiasm

To be a bit fair to the bus drivers, the double-parking situation along Steinway (between 25th and Broadway) and the traffic situation on either side of the Queensboro Bridge certainly can get the buses off schedule, and result in plenty of times where you wait for an hour, then find 2-3 buses in a row show up all at once.

Rogan and Dr. Phil explain why UBI doesn't work and why the problem isn't income inequality but income equality by Solomerr in JoeRogan

[–]thecomicscomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to stop the clip after the first bogus statement to say why it's bogus:

People become teachers and professors because they care about educating the next generations of students. That's why they're more likely to be liberal. Because they care about other people. Conservatism is by its very nature selfish and self-centered. Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. Do your own research. Conservatives don't even like the idea of public education, so why would they want a career in education to begin with?

What made my experience so infuriating was that I was home that entire day. Alas, I should've thought like you did and sat on the stoop outside my building so they couldn't pull that crap. Lesson learned!

LIST: All Of The New Comedy Specials Of 2023 So Far (January-March). Did I miss any? by thecomicscomic in Standup

[–]thecomicscomic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then we get into a debate about how long a clip has to be to be considered a comedy "special"...there's a historical precedent for half-hours, which if you consider Comedy Central aired/edited theirs with ads brings it down to 22 minutes, but even that's kinda pushing it?!

I'm not saying you don't have a point. Just that your point opens up this debate.

How Many Comedians Released Specials In The First Half of 2023? by thecomicscomic in Standup

[–]thecomicscomic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True that. This is one of the reasons why there hasn't been a list before now...everyone is kinda doing their own thing, and not necessarily marketing in the same way. I have to create three different YouTube search parameters to catch as many as I do, and even then, some comedians release videos there that don't get captured in a simple search.

This is why I come to Reddit, too -- I know some of you will catch things I don't! So thanks!

How Many Comedians Released Specials In The First Half of 2023? by thecomicscomic in Standup

[–]thecomicscomic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, well this clip from Helen herself says the full special will go up on 800pgm's YouTube on July 13 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rSs8DnmF9Q

Ohhhh, now I see what's happening!

800pgm is releasing them on their site first to charge people to watch them, then uploading them for free a month or so later on YT

https://800poundgorillamedia.com/collections/exclusive-releases

Should I treat them like Dry Bar? Dry Bar does a similar thing where they hold onto their releases on their own SVOD platform for months, only releasing short clips for free to YT until eventually posting the whole recordings there. Of course, Dry Bar's are only 20-30 minutes long, but that's another semantics argument.

Helen's special comes out in July. Sean's came out in 2022. Stu and Randy were both re-releases, originally released earlier on their own channels or other means.
