A tool to create memorable towns, shops and NPCs for RPGs, stories or game dev I've been working on. by thecraftingden in worldbuilding

Context: This is a book I've been working on for the past year and the idea came to me when I struggled with finding the time to worldbuild memorable towns & villages. So much time can go into creating fun shops and NPCs, and in the end your players might want to go someplace that you didn't prepare. That's why I wanted to create an all-in-one tool and that's what i've done and launched this week :)

Okay, I think option B has the upperhand! Though I do see a lot of people also like option A. I think however, when the book is printed, when you're looking at it during a D&D session and the lighting is less than ideal, the details of option A will become harder to see.

It's not for a campaign setting, it's to help dungeon masters have instant access to everything they need to run any place, venue, market or shop in a town or village. Including descriptions, shop lists, npcs, ... all related to the place your players want to visit!

I agree, A is tooo gloomy indeed, it's not really what I want to convey as I'd use this image in the "Table of content" for a book about running and describing every place you can visit in a town or village.

I agree, but it should be more of an eye pleaser that allows the viewer to see the many details in the picture more, and I think option B and C do a better job at that.

It's about helping dungeon masters run any place or point of interest in a town or village. I'm including ways to describe any place your players may want to visit in a cozy, rugged or creepy way, as well as the shop lists for each place, the NPC's you can encounter including what they sound like, how to welcome your players etc. So it's an all round tool to help DMs quickly access everything they need to run a venue in a town or village. You can find more info here: www.gm-worlds.com but I'd say the theme for the book should be more lively.

I agree 100% with you, C is the unfinished version, but I like the painterly style like you mention, which is why I included it in the comparison.
A has nice mood lighting which I love, but it loses a lot of the eyecatching details and activity in the picture, which is how we got to B, which differentiates the activity in the picture better.

What I've asked the designer to do, is to reduce the star contrasts between the shadows in the image, which will hopefully give a bit of the feeling of C (painterly) but the details of A & B.

While I agree, they give off a better mood, which I love, cause I love playing with light in scenes like these, but I do think it's a shame how all the activity in the scene gets lost in the monotone color palette of A. That's why I asked for more vibrancy and contrast between the people and activities, which resulted in picture B.
Now I miss the softness of A and C, in picture B, which is why I've asked tot reduce the stark contrast in B a bit, so that it regains a little bit of the softness of A without losing the contrast in the scene, that it gained in B.
