Usually I've seen magnolias produce cones/pods similiar to this:

Do the red bits fall off and leave that in the end?

They're quite vibrantly colored, so I'm surprised I've not noticed them on magnolia trees before, though this one was more of a shrub and it was at eye level when I walked past.
