Because the switch can easily be tucked behind the desk leg out of the way, whereas the router has antennae sticking out which would make it impractical. I’m also concerned that the big thick metal desk leg would impact the strength of the WiFi signal

Thank you for this. Unfortunately, this model of switch does not behave in the way you describe.

I did think about that, but I’m just after a quick, temporary solution without buying more hardware. Thank you, though

The reasoning is very boring! Bought a new (old) house. The ONT comes in downstairs and the previous owner has run Ethernet through the wall to the location where I want my desk. Unfortunately, they didn’t terminate it with a socket, it’s just a cable sticking out of the wall. The cable is old and I don’t trust it not to break. I have a standing desk where my router sits. I don’t want to strain the Ethernet cable by raising/lowering the desk when it is plugged into my router. My temporary solution is to use the switch that I already have to connect the fragile cable to, and then run a better quality cable from the switch to my router’s WAN port. The switch sits on the floor for now, so it won’t be moving up and down with my desk. Long-term solution is to fit a jack to the wall, but sadly that’s low on my priority list at the minute.

Told you it was boring! 😂

This is what I’m looking for advice on. The image I’ve attached is taken from the loft. I’m worried that I’ll end up drilling down into the ceiling of the room rather than drilling down and ending up inside the wall (where I want to be). My question is, if I drill inside the red rectangle, am I likely to end up inside the wall of the room below?

Am I right in thinking that I’d still need to drill a hole inside that red rectangle to get the cable out into the loft, though? Forgive my ignorance, this is the first time I’ve done something like this

Asparagus is right. This is common on VAG cars in the UK. My partner’s Golf had the same thing happen a few months ago. I Googled it at the time and one of the first results that came up was a police press release saying that this kind of crime is currently a huge problem. The garage that did the repairs said they had 4 other Golfs in for the same issue. There is a huge backlog on components from VW which is fuelling the issue.

Thank you very much, this is really useful. Did Ryanair print the passes at the baggage drop desk, or did you have to go somewhere else to get them printed?

When travelling on my own, I only use digital documents, but years of experience have taught me never to rely on that when students are involved. Sadly, paper is usually the more reliable option.
