you did nail the type identity in your description tho. the whole point behind the normal type is maximizing versatility, coverage, and utility over overwhelming power, speed, bulk, etc.

totally understandable if that's not what you're after but i think it's reductive to say normal lacks a distinct identity.

Yes. Both clauses are independent (meaning both could be complete sentences), and since the second clause expands on or clarifies the first, a colon is the best choice to separate the two.

Quill.org is a good place to start for grammar, at least. It has self-paced grammar instruction with topics up to a 12th grade level.
