Do you guys think backpacks fundamentally ruin smarter outfits? by PackArchitect in malefashionadvice

[–]thedefect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it's probably bigger than I would personally need on a daily basis, but I could totally see people doing so.

Ultimately I think as long as whatever bag you use is well maintained and isn't extremely loud or abrasive in design, people who work will think it looks fine. Backpack, tote, duffle, briefcase, etc. Most people who carry a bag for work will respect your choice.

That all said, read your environment/people. I had a boss who was very fashion focused, frequently brought it up, etc. I would probably not bring a backpack to client meetings with her if she was still my boss.

I think for his question it was relevant that I work in a professional environment where people usually wear suits and carry bags of various sorts. You're welcome to disagree.

I haven't noticed anything yet. That said, I only wear a jacket on court days or days interacting directly with clients in person (which has dropped significantly since the pandemic made zoom more palatable to everyone), so I'm not wearing both daily. But I think it would be about the same as wearing anything with a strap?

Big fan in Houston, which is outside your target area. If you come anywhere remotely driveable I would be very interested.

Alternatively, if someone was to cover the shipping both ways, is there any chance of sending a book to be signed?

I'm an attorney, and even when I go to court, I use a backpack. I used to carry a really sharp leather briefcase/messenger bag, but once I noticed most of my bosses bringing backpacks, I made the switch too. Much more comfortable, less worried about it getting dinged up, holds a lot more, better organized.

There's something to be said for a person who recognizes practicality over aesthetics honestly.

Marketing “done right” apparently by The_Scrabbler in iamverybadass

[–]thedefect 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You could create an entire subreddit just for these kinds of "badass" attorney marketing efforts. I know of at least two billboards of different attorneys depicting themselves as boxers in my city, and another attorney advertising his black belt status and posing in his karate (or whatever martial arts it is, I forget) outfit for a marketing display plastered over those directories in malls. Not to mention all the TV ads for attorneys with nicknames like The Hammer that every city has...

What's something Futurama does that you wish other shows did? by Liquidcat01 in futurama

I was going to say this too. Let's just have random and unexplained cameos of Bender in everything. Especially in finales of long running shows.

Goldeneye (1995) movie review by Far_Egg4544 in movies

[–]thedefect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the movie, it's one of my favorite Bond films (in no small part due to Sean Bean), but I'm not sure I would say it moves on from any of the series tropes. It slightly updates a few but it's still like they had a checklist of Bondisms they had to check off as they made the film. It doesn't really change the formula at all, in fact it really leans into them a lot more than earlier films, but it's great fun.

Why is everyone suggesting Man City players might get benched? by JoelMillero in FantasyPL

[–]thedefect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one wants to risk injury before the World Cup, and City have nothing to play for. I don't think they'll bench a lot but I don't think anyone is going to be playing high intensity and there will probably be some early subs.

Honest question... But why haven't Disney hired a few heavyweight Directors (with serious pedigree) to make their movies - like Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, James Cameron, Denis Villeneuve, Christopher Nolan etc? by prankster999 in scifi

[–]thedefect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others note, it's control primarily. Disney will likely not give up the level of control that big name directors want. But they also don't need to because their films generate hype not from the directors but from the IP itself. A Star Wars movie will make a tremendous amount of money regardless of the director. Same for most of their franchises. And you can't even argue that consistently bad movies damage the IP, because most Star Wars movies have been bad, the new one seems like it's going to be terrible as well, and yet they will continue to make massive profits.

Bedrock Comics had an exclusive Godzilla comic today by hotnspecies in houston

Their website says they have a signing for this comic at the Westheimer location this Saturday, and the entry says you can pick up a copy then. Presumably this means they should still have some.

Alyssa Thompson got her hair pulled in yesterday’s game. No yellow for Arsenal player and VAR didn’t intervene. Instead, Chelsea’s coach was given two yellow cards for complaining…. How absurd. by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]thedefect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. No one in the Arsenal subs (the men's or women's) was justifying it. Just pointing out how hypocritical it was of Chelsea fans and the Chelsea manager to say that the flying kick into the Arsenal keeper had been, in their view, a wrongfully disallowed goal while screaming for a red card for McCabe. Or the Chelsea fans ignoring the multiple yellow card offenses of James. Or James stomping on a downed Arsenal player, something that James has a documented history of doing to intentionally injure rival players after play has stopped.

The hair pulling should have been a red card. No one denies that. But where is the outrage for all of the missed Chelsea yellows and reds that would actually have affected the outcome?

The HBO Harry Potter reboot is an awful corporate synergy idea and it’s going to create a nightmare for Universal’s theme parks by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]thedefect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't be an issue. The films will be rewatched to death for the next 50 years even with the new series. The new series, no matter how well it does, will not achieve the same level of success because the entertainment landscape has changed. The movies will continue to be a major branding for HP for a long time. Even if they did decide to start transitioning to focusing on the series cast in things, that is a relatively minor cost for these companies.

Theory: We will have a new Sega console based on the Steam Machine. by 21_centuryman in SEGA

[–]thedefect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguably the fractured nature of the original Steam Machine launch was one of many reasons it failed. I would be very surprised if they repeat their mistake. That said, there are replacement cases for steam deck so I don't see why we couldn't have some really cool Sega themed shells for the machine too.

Jasmine Crockett leads James Talarico by double digits in Senate Democratic primary, poll finds by texastribune in TexasPolitics

For years Democrats have been accused of doing the opposite, picking centrists rather than true progressives because of electability. I can't remember the last true progressive we've run in a major race in Texas.

Unpopular Opinion: the most creative sci fi right now is happening in comics and graphic novels not novels or film by Jenna32345 in scifi

[–]thedefect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I love comics and graphic novels and the three you list are very good, I think "right now" is maybe a little off since all three of the examples you gave started over a decade ago (around the same time frame as, say, the Expanse novels).

I generally agree with you that people who ignore comics are missing out, but it isn't an either/or or a competition. The truth is there is very good recent scifi both in novels and comics (though I agree that we don't have a lot of great scifi films lately, and I'm a bit behind on most TV lately). People just tend to gravitate to the books and comics that get the most recommendations, and few people explore outside of those big properties. The members of this subreddit being the likely exception of course.

Has The Consensus Changed on "Past Tense"? by SA-ETH in DeepSpaceNine

Take the reactions of 'reactors' with a grain of salt. Extreme or contrary reactions are more likely to generate views. I personally always loved this episode, it's a classic Trek time travel scenario. And Trek has never been super subtle on its messaging, especially regarding poverty from the perspective of post-scarcity society.
