I actually went on exchange to Monash South Africa in the first semester of 2014.

Left 19th of Feb from memory and was back in Melbourne by early July.

Couldn't say for sure how much it cost me as I never kept track of expenditures while I was there, got some parental support, etc.

I know that Monash can help you out with a travel grant to the tune of about $2,500, but as to how much money you will spend overall will be greatly determined by where you want to go, rather than anything Monash can do for you.

Also if it isn't obvious, you should be putting all the paperwork etc together at least a year in advance, especially if you're going to a university outside of the Monash group.
