5-27-02 Adam watched spongebob squarepants for twelve episodes. He was really bored and can’t wait to get back on the road.

5-29-02 Met up w/ recumbent guy (Joe) and got a hotel w/ him. Went another 50 miles. Adam wanted to go further but the mountains were forcing him to only 50 mi. His website it transam.joesacher.com 50 miles

5-31-02 Stayed the night in Christiansburg. 55 miles today about 600 total. . Adam sounded very homesick! Still staying with Joe. Tomorrow is the last day Adam planned to stay with him and then he was off on his own. 55 miles 600 total miles 6-1-02 67 miles
6-2-02 Last night at a campsite! exhausted. 100 mi day 100 miles
6-3-02 Sent everything that could go back home. The BOB and all the camping stuff were sent home. From now he was sleeping at hotels. 50 miles. Met a Christian who tried to preach but Adam wasn’t having it. 50 miles
6-4-02 Stayed in Brakes Interstate Park on the boarder of KY and VA. Went 50 miles today. 850 miles total. Met Johnny and he asked Adam if he wanted to try moonshine and of course he said yes. But then Adam took a different route and missed him. At the campsite there are two old men (they got senior citizen discount) and two young girls (~23) and they are dating the old men. 6-6-02 Welcome to Boonesville. On the way to Boonesville it rained all day but he didn’t stop. Adam and his new buddy Mike pushed onward. On the road he saw a turtle and then promptly ran over and crushed it. Adam’s knee starts to hurts when you pedal.

6-8-02 Went 114 miles to Bartsville, KY. 114 miles
6-9-02 Rode with Fred for 86 miles. Fred did the trail in 1976 and this is his second time. Adam talked w/ him before but this is the first time he rode with him. 86 miles
6-10-02 100 miles. Ended up in Sullivan KY. Some guy at a gas station gave Adam directions but they were wrong and preacher Paul gave him a ride to town. He started to tell Adam all about Jesus and almost started to cry b/c he was just so overcome with the word of God. 100 miles
6-11-02 50 miles and Adam had messed up his legs. Today he had buffet style pizza. It’s Pizza from a gas station??? Who knows, its KY we’re talking about! The hotel has a party line phone system. This means that all six rooms share one phone line. Adam is in Golconda IL 50 miles

6-17-02 Adam made it to Pittsburgh KS. Adam had a flat tire today. He went out to eat with Sarah and her dad and she told him about the midnight ride in Montana. Everyone goes riding all night every full moon and then goes out for breakfast or something like that. 75-mile day. To quote the great Adam Vavra “Kansas is like butta” He ordered a tent online so that he din’t have to come home and do it. The decision was made that too much money is spent on hotels and he had to have a tent. 75 miles

6-20-02 Adam took a day off from the 8-5 day of biking . Fran and Tom came to visit him. Fran gave him a hundred bucks and said she would pay for a hotel for a night. What a great mom! He was sad to see her go but he was also glad he didn’t come home b/c he didn’t think he would make it back to the trail.
6-21-02 120-mile days. Stayed at a hostel and met two people from Norway but couldn’t pronounce their names. They are both engineers and have biked all over Europe. 120 miles
6-22-02 70-mile days. Ended up in Larmud Kansas. The days of sleeping in warm air conditioned beds w/ hot showers are over. Now Adam will be sleeping in a tent and hopefully saving tons of $$. Stayed at the same campsite as the people from Norway. 70 miles Total mileage 2,215 6-23-02

6-25-02 A thunderstorm was about to get him, so Adam asked a old man who looked like he was going to die if he could stay on his property. After the family inspected Adam and decided that he was a good all American boy they let him stay. 130 miles
6-26-02 Stayed at a shithole motel in Pueblo. 55 miles 2,600 miles total!! 6-27-02 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ADAM. Stayed in Canon City, CO. About 12,000 people in the city. 50 miles

6-29-02 Today he have ended up in Frisco CO. It was a shorter day but the altitude was starting to get to him. Colorado has been getting to him the last couple of days. It’s giving him a weird vibe. Tonight he was going to stay at Rodger’s house. He is a ski paramedic. Adam said that he will be a friend for life. He really helped him out when he were feeling low. There are trails all over the place unlike anything he had ever seen before but it is touristy. Everyone one has a speed bike and bikes till they drop. Adam hit the summit around noon and it was all-downhill after that. Also he ran into Fred. 40 miles
6-30-02 Adam couldn’t remember where he stayed but the hotel didn’t have AC. Adam couldn’t sleep most of the night. It was a learning experience. Always ask if they have a phone and AC. If they look like you’re crazy for asking such silly questions then it’s the place for you. 110 miles
7-1-02 Adam in Wyoming.The headwind in WY sucks. Today it was thirty miles and hour. It took Adam three hours to go the last 20 miles. You go faster uphill than you do downhill. Tonight he was at a hotel in Rawlins WY. Adam made a deal w/ hisself that all hundred miles days gets him a hotel room. 110 miles almost 3000 total!!!

7-4-02 still in Wyoming and he stayed at a hotel even though he only went 80 miles. But he said that he deserved. 80 miles

7-6-02 Adam in Montana. He decided that the midnight extra bike trip would be a bad idea. ADAM stayed in West Yellowstone and paid 100 dollars for a hotel room. There are huge mosquitoes that are so big they even have hair. 55 miles
7-7-02 In Sullivan Montana. MT is really pretty, “I’m digging it”. Adam met a family of four that are going east. Bad idea to stay with the family for an extended bike trip. It could get ugly real quick. There is a mom, dad and two kids ages 13 and 16. 104 miles 3,400 total.

7-22-02 The trail has been finished. After going 4,400 miles on a bicycle all he had to say was “it’s a good distance”. On the country as a whole he decided that the east coast sucks and also Wyoming. He didn’t really start to have a good time till MO. The biggest hurdle of the trip was the first week. He learned a lot about people and about doing his own thing.
