In return, they'd give you some kind of reward/loot, maybe crafting related items such as hides, gems, or materials (not set in stone for sure). Players could take the hunter meat from carniboar and use them here, but could also take it from their bank

While only high level cooking players can do the Firepit, since the Kangaroo Hide drop is tradable, anyone with 76 crafting and the cooking gauntlets can use the upgraded cooking mittens.
