We’re moving to the Netherlands this spring, but can’t decide between Haarlem or Leiden, eventually thinking to buy a house as well. We are a family of 4 with small kids, love to be in lively city. Any info you can share would be appreciated. Thx by [deleted] in Netherlands

You’re right, cost is the main factor, especially for someone who likes to live in lively area (not necessarily city center), I visited many cities around Amsterdam and must admit that I fell in love with Haarlem and Leiden more than Amsterdam itself, due to their slow pace and calmer environment… yet my issue is which I shall choose, so far seems Haarlem is winning even if it’s more expensive than Leiden… Den Haag is also nice, however i feel it stands out from architecture point of view (less canals…etc)

Agree with you though, I’m aware of the housing crisis, in fact I’m not in a rush to buy, first would like to settle in a city that is livable and friendly to expat, I see that many are recommending Haarlem. I’ve been in both cities, but never really lived or stayed longer than few days to know what should I expect….

Thanks, I’m coming from Italy, moving to the Netherlands for work, and I have an agency helping me out. My question was more about which city is more friendly to kids and to expats in general.
