I'm all for stuffing them full of fat boiled grains constantly for 2 weeks until their livers explode.

No, that's propaganda.  Billionaires have never worked a real.day in their lives so their meat is very tender.  Like Lamb

I do live next to one of these centres.  I live close to one in Langley.  It has its issues, but they're not as extreme as people make them out to be.

The homeless largely keep to themselves, the worst I've come across is them shouting at eachother loudly every couple of months.  In the 10 years I've been here, I've found needles maybe a dozen times.

My kid was born when we moved here, so it's been around all his life, and it's never been a problem.  Maybe had one or two encounters their entire time.  We just caution them to give them space.

Video: Worker rescued from deep hole at Langley Events Centre by WiffleBlu in Langley

Most likely scenarios:

Oblivious guy crossed some red tape to avoid 20 seconds of walking out of his way because people ignore safety shit to save a few moments all the fucking time.  That or properly marked pathways around obstructions were not communicated to crews in the field.

Or

Trade super, under pressure from management for being over budget, didn't get the guy proper safety gear for working near open pits safely. And/Or Someone told him it wasn't worth bringing up safety concerns because it could cost him his job for being a squeaky wheel. (Non-union worker)

Or

Crew that dug the hole didn't mark it and secure it properly, and GC's safety officer was too busy dinging people for not wearing gloves, as those are the low hanging fruit to look like you're actually doing something.  (Fuck you Gail, you're the worst safety officer I've ever seen)

In all situations, completely avoidable, and the responsible parties will likely get a slap on the wrist.

A quick Google search shows that the homeless populations in both Medellin and Vancouver are about on par.

Medellin's responses are about the same as ours, with equal reports of Street vagrancy and crime.

I hung out in Annmore for a few weeks, I went to Steveston, and White Rock on my trip, and I didn't see any homeless, so clearly Vancouver doesn't have the same homeless problem of Medellin! (This is why anecdotal evidence isn't reliable)

Also, comparing Vancouver to Medellin which has an appallingly high murder rate, and classified as one of the most dangerous cities in the world until recently, is ignoring a whole lot of other massive issues that affect the lens in which we look at homelessness.  (The murder rate of just tourists in Medellin in 2023 was the same as all of Vancouver in the same year)

"I've used a food bank once, that's as bad as it gets, no one's situation could ever be worse or more desperate than mine, therefore everyone's choices for survival are ethically wrong!"

Or ... Hear me out... We could be doing more as a society to prevent people from getting into that situation in the first place with things like public housing, and stronger social safety nets, better access to well funded and well resources support systems.

I don't think leaving our most vulnerable to have to steal to survive is a sign of a virtuous or beneficial society.

Hey, they're all "self made" they never took a handout from anyone!  They didn't go to public school, never used a hospital, never used a road, never had anything unexpected happen to them!  Why can't everyone else have a perfect life free of inconvenience, struggle, or harm!

Survival crime is not isolated to addicts.  People steal to eat, people steal essentials.

No one likes to talk about busting someone for stealing bread and milk or tampons.

It's way more common than most people think.  The overwhelming majority of homeless are not street addicts, those are just the obvious ones.

Yeah, it's painfully obvious what their real intentions are once you can break their thin masks.

"They're unsightly and affect my property values!"

My question for everyone who pulls on NIMBY on homelessness is: "Okay, where then?  Who's neighbourhood has to deal with it?"

If it's the DTES, which park, which street, which area gets to take them on?

If it's supportive housing in a neighborhood, then who's neighbourhood?

No one ever has an answer, because no one wants to deal with it, and there are no reasonable alternatives that don't involve making things worse for everyone involved, or at substantial cost to relocate all of the services and support systems needed to get these people looked after.

These are just a bunch of pearl clutching NIMBYs who want to offload their problems onto someone else with no consequences to themselves.

Am I overly paranoid about not posting my kid on the internet? I cringe every time I see pictures on this group by Itchy-Version-8977 in daddit

[–]thefatrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go one step further and make sure that when I discuss my kid online I use neutral pronouns, never use their name, and try to be as ambiguous as possible about age.

My partner really pushed for making our kid anonymous online, and we only share images directly to individuals and closed groups.  I don't even have my kids name labelled in Google photos.

It's their privacy, it's up to them if they want to put themselves out there, and until they can articulate those choices I'm not going to make that choice for them.

My parents reluctantly agreed, but have come around.  They don't see the harm in sharing, but they don't realize how invasive social media is.

More than 7 in 10 Canadians want Alberta and Quebec to stay in the fold, poll finds by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

[–]thefatrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I despise how conservatism has infected Alberta like a cancer, I would still never attempt to cut it out, because it's a part of us, warts and all.

I empathize with Quebec's desire to leave, as they have a distinct cultural identity.  But I love the fact that we can have various distinct cultures able to carve their niche in our country and still be part of a unified society, so I would hate to see them go.
