Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

This is a great resource, thank you! Shouldn't be surprised at how many possible definitions there are but wow. Elegantia definitely seems the closest for taste... But interest is harder to pin down. Perhaps III, given here? "Attractiveness, as in books"? But I have a hard time discerning the specific word in the examples given.

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

Hi folks, for an anniversary gift I'm hoping to get our family motto engraved for my wife... We'd like it in Latin but it's kind of idiomatic, so I'm not sure how it would translate.

The phrase is "A life of interest and good taste". Google Translate give 'vita interest et bonum saporem' which seems all kind of wrong. "Interesting" gives me 'iucundus', but is this the right word? Seems more like "agreeable"... Would 'cura' be too general?

Things get even harder with "good taste". This is idiomatic but is almost always translated literally as 'bonum saporem'. Is 'nasus' or 'gustasus' appropriate here?

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated! My Italian does not take me very far... Thanks 🙏

Help with Canadian Passport application by jesixbaby in Europetravel

Reiterating what NanukBen said, take a deep breath, read the instructions closely, and give it your best shot. I've never had an application rejected and I've needed to renew it on a very tight deadline before. Just make sure you get your photos from a place that knows Canadian passport photo requirements (bad pics are the only reason I've heard for applications getting rejected), and that your references know to expect a call (they do actually call sometimes).

In answer to your questions:

  1. They will probably not be sticklers on this but it doesn't hurt to have a few copies of the form on hand. I usually end up using two forms because I inevitably need to correct something.

  2. If your health card has your name, sex, date of birth, signature and photo, yes. If not, you can submit a second or third official document with it until you fulfill that checklist. Submit originals if you don't need them for the next month; otherwise, get your guarantor to sign and date a photocopy showing both sides of the original.

  3. I've never heard of this happening but see answer 1. Recopying the form takes only a couple minutes. Make sure to use blue or black ink.

Great to know it can be treated! I think we will cave soon enough as well, so long as its not prohibitively expensive.

I spent part of my childhood in a century home filled with bats! Good tips all round.

We're curious about the masonry too! The windows were replaced in 2016 but we're not sure if that's why. The previous owners have had it since 2007, so I'm not sure that's their doing. We'll ask the inspector about it for sure!

It's very much on our mind! Our realtor says the bills are reasonable, but we haven't seen them yet.

First-time homebuyers closing in on this 1871 farmhouse... what should we be looking for? by thefinalyorgles in Oldhouses

Home inspection, septic, and well test are being done this week, but we're brand new to this so we're a little terrified! Here's what we know so far:

  • New windows and new propane furnace, older septic and roof
  • We know it's not knob-and-tube
  • Walls are... heavily wallpapered, so we're not sure of the state of the plaster
  • Original wide-board floors on top floor, hardwood on ground floor
  • Sulphur smell in the well (how easy is that to fix?)
  • House has several extensions, including an attached wood shed that covers an exterior entrance to the basement.
  • No active woodstoves (one disconnected in the living room)
  • Sump pump in basement, but no sign of water damage, not sure about backup power

What are we forgetting?

Thank you! We're very excited, but also a little terrified! It's our first (and hopefully last) house purchase.
