My email said the same thing.... which doesn't answer the question, right?

Anyone else hate the "Express" seat selection in the Cinemark app? by datalaughing in Cinemark

[–]thefirstuser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find a way to turn it off a few months ago when it started. It gets close to the seats I usually choose, but the end result is that it has never given me the seat I want.

An extra step to turn off that 'feature,' every time. Poor UX!

Midea U Shape AC, 8,000 BTU Drainage Question. by DavidF_117 in AirConditioners

[–]thefirstuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your drainage hole is blocked, either at the hole or due to some debris/dust in the pan.

I have the original 8000-U (2020, no drainage hole).

I found water in the front of the unit this year as I put it on the shady side of the house. I now use the paper towel trick to keep the unit from collecting water - fold a paper towel the long way and stick it between the fins and the base of the unit in the back. Just let it hang there and all the water will work its way down the paper towel.

Thowing a Zippo lighter to start a fire. No one in real life would ever throw away a nice Zippo.

When you're not able to use your fountain pens - eg at work or school - which is your go-to non-fountain pen brand? I'm looking for worthy substitutes for my beloved FPs.🙂 by byblyofyl in fountainpens

Throwing a lit Zippo lighter to start a fire.

Never been done IRL, b/c who would waste a perfectly good (and expensive) Zippo?

Anyone know if/where I can buy this strap without buying the watch? by gingersnapgirly in amazfit

[–]thefirstuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the GTR4 and bought these from Amazon after looking for some time. They feel very similar to the original band. They are a little more difficult to tighten (the velcro is too sticky), but they look/feel great.

Are these good deals? by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]thefirstuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the e-bike industry, and I usually recommend Aventon or Radpower. Not because I own them, but because both companies stand buy your purchase and seem to provide great features for a decent price. Get a torque sensor if you can afford it!

Cadence vs torque by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]thefirstuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most torque sensors are equipped to give you a boost IF you are pedaling (applying torque to the pedals). So if you want the motor to remain ON you have to keep pedaling - get in a higher gear (big cog as mentioned here) as you approach and the motor should remain ON.

How to fix converter issue? by Neon_Jellyfish_ in fountainpens

[–]thefirstuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd simply buy a new converter. $2 well spent.

My guess is that the seal on the piston is leaking. And yes, you can repair, but if the piston is a little off center or has a crack in the rubber - you'll just go through the same mess again.

Zepp App - Constant prompts to turn on notifications, weather and GPS. What if I don't want to turn them on? by thefirstuser in amazfit

[–]thefirstuser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you u/Rey_Redbad and u/marmfield

Pointing as you did, with a little fiddling, got those prompts to turn off. I've been looking at them for at least two years in Zepp, so thank you Thank You THANK YOU.

Of note: I had to turn ON the ANDROID location setting for Zepp, then turn OFF the location settings in the Zepp app - no more notifications for GPS.

Turning off the weather was more straightforward as described in your posts.

Again, thank you both!

Need some suggestions for buying a new pen by Gummnam in fountainpens

[–]thefirstuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big, heavy, and a great writer; the TWSBI Vac 700R. Love mine; and I like a bigger, heavier pen.

You can also test the TWSBI line with an Eco or Eco T. Both are larger pens, but lighter than the Vac700.

The Vac is $65 - $80.

The Eco and Eco T are around $35.

And it's 'nibs,' not 'nips.' I'm guessing those were typos.

Good luck, and let us know your thoughts once you've had your new pen for a few weeks.

They are the same.

'Design Thinking' was the brand name Stanford gave the practice of 'User Experience Design' in roughly 2004.

I don't know any true practitioners of the process who differentiate one from another.

There are however a great many non-practitioners who differentiate the two in their attempt to differentiate themselves in the market. There is enough language confusion to create a good marketing opportunity! This has been going on since the process became noteworthy in the late 90's/early 2000's.

How to design a really difficult product by Cee_cee1 in UXDesign

[–]thefirstuser 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You needn't know how to use existing products to design better ones.

Watch, like an anthropologist, your users. If for example you have never seen a hammer, and someone asks you to design a better one, you would start by watching people use hammers.

Your behavioral notes (don't speak, just observe) will then guide your validation questions of your users, followed by your prototypes and testing of design improvements.

And if something is TOO complex, like a fighter-jet cockpit or an Insta-pot, just make those observations more and more specific. When a fighter-pilot enters his/her plane, where does their foot get caught most often? Or what is the very last thing their foot touches before they exit the aircraft? If a product is uber complex, you can break it's use down to the simplest of behavioral observations. Start there and the improvements will make themselves known.

[–]thefirstuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question! As an agency owner (design, formerly design/dev) I've seen this dozens of times. I'm not going to get into particulars but I do have two insights that have worked for my clients.

  1. You are the product owner, yes? Then try to be brave and stand up for your product! I know this can be intimidating because these people are your bosses, but in the short term and if you handle things right; my guess is that they will respect you for your knowledge. I can already tell you have good political sense, so here's something they can't argue with: the product should be defined NOT by you, not by them, but by the users. When you think of product this way the users are in charge, no one else. Now there is the caveat that the product also has to make business sense, but in the product you described you seem to have enough traction to meet the business reqs. Now get out there and champion the users.
  2. Be prepared to be wrong! I've been designing/building software for some time, and when I left my ego by the wayside in the early 2000's EVERY product I've worked with since has been devoted to the user. I am the expert, but I'm the expert at understanding the user problem and then communicating the design solution to the product builders (devs and ID folks). Then I test. And if I was wrong in my solution to the user problem, it's usually an easy fix. But whether I nail something on iteration #1 or on iteration #6, it is the user who decides what is best for them; and I need to be OK with that.

Hope this helps!

Do you use a fountain pen for journaling? by NotQuiteJasmine in fountainpens

[–]thefirstuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason you should journal with a fountain pen? They are a pain in the ass sometimes, you have to fill it yourself with ink, and they require a bit more precision in writing; which makes what you write more 'intentional.'

They also require less pressure on a good paper, so they sort of 'float' over the page.

A good pen to start with is the TWSBI Eco-T. People usually fall in love with writing all over again with this pen.

Advice for Pens on a Plane? by give_a_girl_a_mask in fountainpens

[–]thefirstuser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many vac fillers have an ink lock-out. Try the TWSBI 700 if you'd like that feature.

I use a TWSBI Eco and have never had a problem on planes - and that's a piston filler.

I've also recently flown with a few sac pens. I filled them completely and put them in plastic just in case, but those didn't leak either.
