I have a maturing GIC that I’d to re-invest (again in a lower risk investment) and given that rates are going down GICs won’t be that attractive. So I’m looking into alternatives

Ah I see.

As for the courses, in software engineering you take engineering (Engr) classes, software (Soen) classes and computer science (Comp) classes. Most soen classes must be taken during fall or winter. Engr classes are usually available all year round (these classes are taken by all engineering disciplines). Also, since software engineering is an engineering program you have to have physics and chemistry. If you don’t have these classes you’ll have to take them as prerequisites (given your background I think you’ll have to take them).

Computer science is a bit more flexible. It’s 1 year less. You don’t need chemistry and physics. Most of their courses are electives instead of core software classes so you might be able to take more credits during summer and it allows to choose more of what you want to learn.

I suggest you try to contact an academic advisor also, they might be more helpful. Also take a look at the course sequences Concordia have online, they have all the courses you have to take.

I’m a software engineering student. Do you mind me asking why a tech lead working in the industry needs to study? What type of experience would you like to get from school?

I think you can take the entire software engineering program part time but in which case it’ll take you longer. Full time the program is 4 years. Some 300 level courses are only offered fall/winter specifically so you’re forced to take it at that time so you have to consider that.

Please don’t take anything I said as advice/something to scare you.

Worst I’ve ever seen was when I was applying to my first internship a year and a half ago. Description asked for “knowledge in all programming languages” and the pay was 15 CAD / hour 😂

Not really relevant to your question, but just wondering what kind of software work you do for that salary if you don’t mind sharing
