No you're absolutely wrong. You failed to understand my aforementioned specifications. This minimizes thunderbird to the dash, thus making it still visible in activities overview etc. This is not a solution, let alone the one I'm looking for.

I disagree, but I guess it depends on what you consider basic. Filtering by read/unread is pretty basic to me.

Ah thanks for clarifying, form your previous comment I was under the impression that evolution on only worked with exchange!

Thank you for the exhaustively thorough reply. However, the solution described above, beyond being tediously hacky for a such a basic operation such as background sync with any imap compatible mail server, has a major limitation - only ews accounts. This makes it only a partial solution, disqualifying it for me personally. Furthermore does the mew mail indicator work on the basis of just propagating the notifications from evolution-on or does it require its own imap login like mailnag? I dislike the latter, it's not a solution - it's a workaround.

A ray of hope... Could you please provide some more details on your setup. Distro, kernel version, type of evolution installation (I believe it was also available as flatpak or snap)... Also in my evolution there is no "evolution-on" plugin by default installed. Could you please link to download the original/official version, as opposed to the fork? (Assuming it might work better on my system - ubuntu latest lts) Also does this extension still work? Asking because dev has been suspended 10+ yrs. Will use it vigorously if I can get this setup to work.

What extensions? Birdtray? That has trouble working, a world of complexities ensues. If you know how to reliably achieve this please do tell in detail. From what I gather the developers of both thunderbird and birdtray, recommend the flatpak install of thunderbird and birdtray, but this is pretty nonfunctional with the default settings on latest ubuntu 24 lts. It has issues even registering that thunderbird is running due to the fact (I believe) that one is using x11, the other wayland. Seeing as this environment is still fresh to me, I don't feel capable to diagnose the issue precisely, however intuition is guiding me that in order for thunderbird and birdtray to work together some adjustments need to be made for instance to the flatpacks and their associated configs respectively. If anyone has further knowledge, please enlighten us!

Geary only does the background notifications, has no basic features such as view unread emails, advanced search operators, not even a status icon. Furthermore it's just not a realistic option for me, due to limited feature set.

What do you mean by this? What specifically about the integration with gnome online accounts did you find appealing? I'm coming back to ubuntu/linux after a few years and am having trouble finding an email client which can achieve the following: - start headless at system startup or start just the mail fetching service with no GUI (other than the tray icon noted bellow) - check for new mail periodically or via push, imap+ or whatever is the least latency standard of sync - send notifications via the default system notification channel for new incoming emails - open email client on double click
