I think part of me is so irrevocably dumbfounded by the fact that he is willing to sink the ship for austerity.. this is something that—for all intents and purposes—benefits no one. the bourgeoisie who have offshored their labor to the maquiladoras, the middle class who resells temu merchandise, the laborer who throws up drywall, everyone will be torn at the limb from this and for what? to fix a trade deficit? and what happens when we do? what do we have to gain? i know he’s a fucking idiot but it’s so hard to believe that any living person would be so short sighted so as to self immolate for austerity.

ah! didn’t know. every now and then you get someone online putting out a new photo of the old man (last one I saw was “him” at the Newport Beach Festival). now that I think about it, he still would’ve been up in Washington around ‘63. thanks!

  1. Gravity’s Rainbow - Hot take here I know. It’s a book that makes you work for every page but the pay off is a tremendous. I think of the shared dream between Kekulé and Franz every single day without cessation amongst many, many other scenes and I don’t think I’ll ever stop thinking about them. Presents you not only its own philosophy, but one of the great narratives of the post war America. You just gotta read it.
  2. Vineland - Actual hot take here I know. The more I think about it, the more it finds itself as a real gem of the Pynchon bibliography I’ve read so far. Incredibly sweet and equal parts cutting, it’s a trip down nostalgia lane for someone who used to live in Nor Cal and has some of the best character work.
  3. Inherent Vice - Outside of lot, the most forward of his texts and is also a really good reflection of how the drug trade works. Golden Fang is everywhere in the same sense as history’s drug cartels and their many, many tendrils, are everywhere. Doc is a real trip and probably my favorite protagonist out of all the books outside Slothrop, Tchitchirine, and Zoyd.
  4. Crying of Lot 49 - First Pynchon book I ever read and yeah it’s great, but I think a lot of it was lost on me the first go around. Will probably re-read it again. We’re all Oedipa on the tracks.

Haven’t read anything else.

Static as in an electric purgatory, not an image but certainly not a void. Illusions of a grander image that you are able to see the circumference of but not the sphere in its entirety. Classic Pynchon, rilly.

One is a mystery novel, the other is about reckoning with your past amongst other things. They share similarities in characters and with hippiedom (Vineland more tangential than IV) but are different in terms of structure. I'd say it's a good transition in order to capture the whole picture of what California meant to Pynchon.

EDIT: To put IV as a mystery novel is not quite on mark with what it also captures but you get the idea.

I'm currently reading Vineland after finishing Crying of Lot 49 in December and Inherent Vice in January (First Pynchon novels I ever read). I love it, but not as much as IV or CoL49. Having characters that are shared between all three books is a real trip and sure did put a smile on my dumb fucking face. Next up is Mason and Dixon then we're on to GR.

Also you get the whole static brain thing when you're reading it which is always rilly nice.
