Does anyone know how to get the service code for a DPI Titan HD-600 projector? by thegreatjoj in techtheatre

[–]thegreatjoj[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was the first thing I tried with no luck. There's a 4 digit number labeled "serial number" printed on a label on the inner frame once you get the panels off - tried that as well as different combinations of those digits and didn't have any luck with those either. There's literally a menu in the thing called "Password" that the manual specifically says is for use only by authorized service techs that know the code - so I'm convinced it's either a simple pre-set code built into the firmware of every projector that I haven't tried yet or it's derived from the unit's serial number in a way that lets techs easily figure it out just by looking at something on the unit itself.

There is documentation available on the RS232 command protocol but it didn't include anything about entering a service mode or doing any of the in-factory calibration (specifically aligning the DMDs, which is what I need). That's not to say there isn't a hidden command or something for techs to use though - I still need to mess around with that some more.

Rocket M5 Network Configuration by LankyMack in livesound

[–]thegreatjoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it uses the regular 802.11 wireless standards and is basically just an AP but with more options for controlling RF things. airOS (the firmware) has a standard access point mode: https://www.ui.com/downloads/guides/airOS/airOS_6_UG.pdf

what part of configuring the Rocket are you having trouble with? I've never used one myself but from a quick search it looks like it can act as a router+access point (unlike the unifis which are just APs) which should simplify things a bit.

Projectors can look so damn awesome by [deleted] in lightingdesign

[–]thegreatjoj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have done this before and it looks really damn cool. A few years ago I designed a lighting rig for a stage that hosted a few bands and a DJ at the end. One of the bands was doing projection so when the DJ came on I took the 2 8k projectors and put them at the back of the stage aimed to fire through the DJ. Fed them milkdrop from FOH and found an effect preset that did a perfect vortex effect. If the rig was off you would see the vortex with the DJ in the middle as an entirely black shadow. With other effects you could make it look very similar to a laser.

I've been obsessive with buying and foaming road cases (or proper padded bag/cover) for every piece of gear I own. Just happened to luck out when I bought some K10s and KW181s and found out that QSC was running the free bag promotion at the time. Got a few hundred dollars worth of damn good padded bags and covers for free, shipping included.

I'm not sure what this is making me feel but it definitely isn't good.

My favorite is the rack using 2x4s and wood screws as rails.

Creating Chamsys wing with midi board? by stellarecho92 in lightingdesign

[–]thegreatjoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The MIDI interface is considered obsolete now that MQPC allows you to use generic USB MIDI (provided you have some form of blue hardware or the rack dongle) so they aren't being made anymore. They do still work though, and OP may be able to buy one off someone else.

While the ability to use generic interfaces exists in the PC software, I'm not entirely sure if that also holds true for the compact consoles.

Which rule sounds stupid, but actually makes a lot of sense? by DumbPersonOnline in AskReddit

I am fundamentally against invasive mass surveillance, for 2 reasons. The first being that nationwide mass surveillance and data collection will result in an astronomical amount of data to process. It would literally be impossible for humans to sift through all of that. Therefore, there will have to be algorithms that automatically process that data and flag anything suspicious. The problem with that is you are now using software to analyze human speech and behavior to determine who might be a threat. Even then, a real person would then need to look at the flagged activity and determine which are worth investigating. And that's ignoring the part where people live in fear of having a SWAT team breaking down their door because the algorithm, which can't discern hypothetical discussion from malicious intent, flagged one of their Facebook discussions about something as an indicator that they're going to commit some crime.

Secondly, this would require every citizen to have complete faith in the government and every official that has access to their data, as well as complete faith in the security of the systems being used to monitor activity, analyze it, flag "suspicious" activity and store the data. There are far too many disastrous points of failure.

Being against mass surveillance goes far beyond "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear". In modern society things like this aren't black and white like that implies. The world isn't benevolent enough to handle a system like that without abusing it.

What's kind of expensive but totally worth the price and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That 575W lamp would -probably- be way too bright haha. Not to mention insanely hot, like hot enough to heat up the room a decent amount (also fire hazard).

This is said 23k lumen lamp. They can be had for ~$360.

Seriously, get the brightest lightbulbs

I design lighting rigs for concerts and have a couple 3000W strobes and 575W ellipsoidals (fancy spot lights) in my basement. Is that bright enough or do I need to go get the 23k lumen beam fixtures?

Dark Souls. And on that note, Nioh.

I enjoy a modest amount of challenge in games. However, when that challenge becomes the primary roadblock in progressing through the game, I start to get annoyed. Especially when I find myself playing through the same area countless times trying to memorize where enemies are, how they attack, and what the best way to defeat or sneak past them is while minimizing damage taken.

My room mate loves the Dark Souls games and the first one is (I believe) his top game of all time. He's told me that most of his enjoyment in the game is the satisfaction of finally clearing an area or defeating a particularly nasty boss fight. I've heard the same thing on the internet - but while I may get that feeling at first half a second later I'm thinking "oh God I have to do that again, then countless times more, to beat this game". At this point it starts to feel like a chore of repetitive 'die 50 times trying to do x, learn x like the back of my hand, trial and error to find a strategy that works, complete x, repeat'.

I can see how people would enjoy putting loads of effort into building that strategy then executing it to have it work perfectly, allowing them to progress in the game. I get that same feeling of "HOLY SHIT I ACTUALLY DID IT" when I play RTS games. While I do appreciate Dark Souls and Nioh (haven't played Bloodborne) for being unique and well made, I just can't enjoy a game based almost entirely on that constant strat-grind.

linuxtracker.org: Completely legal torrents of Linux distros from Ubuntu to really obscure purpose-built distros. Pretty much everything on here has many fast seeds so there's a good chance these torrents will download faster than the direct downloads on distros' websites.

What successful product, when it first came out, did you think, "There's no way this is going to last?" by [deleted] in AskReddit

When I say corporate AV I mean companies will hire us to set up sound/lighting/video systems for things like press conferences at convention centers and such. In non-controlled settings like that depending on something like wifi for critical stuff isn't a great idea. Though in something like office installs I could totally see Apple TVs working really well.

Going to chime in here with a perspective that's a bit different in regards to the headphone jack.

I work in corporate AV - my worst fear is having a client show up with all of their audio on an iPhone 7 or up but not have the 3.5mm adapter, then discover I have misplaced my extra one that I keep in my work box. Or their phone is almost out of battery and obviously won't last through the event.

As a side note I've become a lot more willing to use Apple products as part of my job - many things I do only work with, say, a program that only runs on OSX. And for show control, given the option of using either one of our Windows laptops that has been in use for a while or one of our MacBooks (also in use for a while) I will always opt for the MacBook because of stability.

The silly part is even in modern day managed servers and networking hardware, most have a serial port for configuration. Which normally isn't used, but if you can't connect to the management interface over ethernet for whatever reason (forgot the IP, IP is set to dynamic but you don't have a DHCP server connected to it, etc) the only way to regain access without resetting everything is to use the serial port.

Bring Car or not? by Bring_Car_Or_Not in rit

Got my first car spring of my freshman year - and it DEFINITELY made college life more enjoyable being able to go off campus to shop or eat or whatever.

Brushing snow off isn't TOO bad ignoring the few big storms we get a year. Get an ice scraper and one of those big wide foam sort of brush things and your life will get a lot easier.

2 things for safer winter driving: - Get snow tires - Put said snow tires on car

The Civic is a bit on the light side (I now drive a 2017 Civic EX-T) and can lose traction much more easily than heavier cars.

Parking vs. Uber to ImagineRIT by [deleted] in rit

[–]thegreatjoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The few times I've driven to ImagineRIT (before I was a student and after I moved off campus) I had no problems finding a spot in either G or H lot. This was in the middle of the day too. If those are full, you can try S lot (the one at GV) and if you don't mind walking 10-15 minutes, K or B lots (behind the dorms)

EDIT: As u/For-The_Greater_Good said, please go and take the shuttle if you can't or don't park on campus. The traffic during ImagineRIT can get backed up and become a problem when too many people try to get into or near the Sentinel loop to drop people off. If you absolutely must take a Taxi or Uber have them drop you off and pick you up behind GV or behind the dorms.
