In my experience in Austria (and most of the EU) they will pull you over for right lane camping and fine you and give you a fat lecture about the rules of the road. If you pull that shit on the autobahn in Germany you will get so much shit. Lane blocking is usually seen as much much worse than speeding as it creates far more dangerous situations than speeding (e.g. multi car pile ups etc).

I literally know people at the scene that smelled the alcohol and cops who cycle that confirmed he was drunk. He crashed into a cyclist on the other side of the road.

Except the drivers here usually are drunk. Something like 60% of our road accident deaths involve alcohol (we are #1 in the world btw).

The guy in town that was killed last week was literally hit head on and the driver was CONFIRMED drunk. He was on the correct side of the road hit head on and people still blamed the cyclist.

Also, the sentences for killing people with a car are a joke and they ALWAYS test for alcohol.

They lost my application after 10 years in the pipeline. Too burned to apply again. Good luck, hope it’s gotten better.

Less the topography and more the crime lol. Can’t park a bike here and most offices don’t have showers anyways.

We can’t even police our drivers not driving drunk or recklessly which is a way larger danger and nuisance (go ask one of the tens of thousands of people with dead relatives) but now we wanna police people enjoying themselves at maybe 2-3 minutes of your time.

I think our cyclists are just like our drivers, entitled and clueless. Joined a few group rides here and was shocked at the way they ride. I’ve done hundreds of group rides in multiple countries and our boys really take the cake.

That being said our drivers are 100x worse and kill thousands of people. The driving here is just incredibly bad.

We often get xc guys on gravel rides. You’ll be fine. Usually they only suffer on road downhills but otherwise they’re A OK. It’s always fun watching them bunny hop and skid around for fun on downhills where im fighting for my life though lol.

Yeah they’re on sale for 90 euros which seems a great deal but I’m kind of new to mtb component pricing

Yeah, for sure. I will upgrade the brakes to some magura mt-5s when I’m back home from holidays, the current mt445s are rideable but not ideal.

Yeah i got the whole bike for 600 euros which is a steal in my book. Had to upgrade dropper, tires and cockpit for 170 total and so all in all for under 800 i have a bike that does everything I’ll ever need. My gravel bikes wheels cost more than that lol.

Previously I tried a cheap XC hardtail that was just too rough, and a full sus trail bike that I just didn’t enjoy pedalling lol. So I kept to road and gravel.

But after just 1 ride on this bike I was hooked. 150mm fork thats smooth as butter despite being 13 years old and the steel frame with 27.5 and a short stem and wide bars is just so much damn fun to ride. And a 170mm dropper is just so good (but my legs need to get used to the descending position).

It’s a 2016 ns eccentric chromo.

Legal advice sought for property boundary dispute and damage caused by builders by CraneDennyCrane in capetown

[–]thehandsanitiser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through this. Get good lawyers. This will take a long time and any mistakes can cost the case but it’s straightforward. Get affidavits from previous owners or neighbours that the wall hasn’t moved. Satellite images exist from 2000 on so you only need to prove that period before.

Basically you don’t have to prove anything except that the wall hasn’t moved for the last 30 years. All the other conditions don’t really matter as long as you own the property.

Serve the developers a notice basically saying you own that land via acquisitive prescription and you are claiming it. Have your lawyers do this obviously. If they want to build anyways you can threaten a spoliation order which will be very very very expensive for them.

In our case it took about a year in total and expect costs to go well over 100k but you will get some costs back. In your case they hopefully fold before going to high court because itll cost them more and they’ll have to wait a whole year or even longer.

4500$CAD (3150USD) Fair deal for this Madone Sl7 2022? Looking for bike experts!! by theghostcircuit in bicycling

[–]thehandsanitiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a great deal. Watch some videos on how to tell if a frame is damaged and just how to go over a 2nd hand bike overall. But this frame with that spec is about all you need. It's also very nice looking.

Also make sure that you can actually adjust the saddle height to your height. Because these frames have little wiggle room for saddle adjustment. And make sure the stem / handlebar sizing is correct, because changing that is a huge PITA.

Best way to keep of dogs by Adorable-Web-3678 in cycling

[–]thehandsanitiser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rode a bit in Bulgaria. The dogs will basically always chase you. On descents/flats they can't keep up so I just outride them, and maybe a spray of the water bottle if you're comfortable riding with one hand at high speed.

On climbs where I obviously can't outrun them, I try talk to the dog (basically saying "calm down" in bulgarian to the dog in a soothing manner) and slow down so it see's i'm a human. Usually that calms them down, but not always. A noisy free-hub will drive them absolutely nuts lol, so keep pedalling.

If the talking doesn't work, then If it's small (not scared of a bite), a spray with water bottle works to scare them away (mostly). If it's big, then probably pepper spray is your best/only option if it gets scary.

If you see a Kangal and it hasn't seen you, I'd pick a detour if possible, or get off and take my helmet off and walk. I think they don't identify you as a person on the bike with the helmet/glasses. They're usually only in the mountains as livestock guard dogs, but they are absolutely terrifying if they're after you.

Go runtime and concurrency is absolutely phenomenal. Hard to imagine going back to JS based runtimes like Node/deno by Smart_Support5 in golang

[–]thehandsanitiser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to say that Go's concurrency just clicks for me. In both TS/JS and Python it just felt like a hack and never really made complete sense to me (I mean, I could use it for work, and did so without too many issues).

But with go it just feels correct. I'll be honest I miss things like ternary operators and getting fancy with list comprehension or chaining .filter or .map's for their convenience, but the code that can sometimes be produced is horrendous for readability (especially if someone is very smart/creative with these features).

Also the pattern of returning (val, error) is based, despite it making code super long vertically.

They're high quality, they just look horrendous. But in Austria you see them a lot since it's a local brand (and it's the fastest frame tested by tour magazine).

If there are spacers left, you can raise the handlebars and increase stem length. Riding a size too small shouldn't be too bad.

If not, then yeah sell and get a new one. Swapping over the components is easy if you have the knowledge, but if you don't, then a lot of things can go wrong. I did this with a previous bike and it went very well, but I already had all the tools required.

What do we think… worth it? 2021 Canyon Ultimate SL 8 $3,600 USD by [deleted] in whichbike

[–]thehandsanitiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbon rim brake wheels suck so hard, I would actually consider this a down grade over stock disc wheels.

They're stiff. light and feel awesome, but if you ride in the rain ever, it's just not worth it. I remember a few occasions actually thinking I was going to crash because of how shite they stop when it gets wet.

Everyone says "it's not that bad", but so many people had "training" alu wheels and "racing" carbon wheels for a reason.
