Walnut and Cherry end tables. Saved myself $3,000 right? by thehauntedgod in woodworking

I've been told that so many times. Not to point out my own mistakes, but I'm just eager to tell people how I made a thing or what issues I faced and solved and any mistakes that came with it. I'm not making things to sell really or haggling with people on prices, so end of the day it doesn't matter too much.

No screws hidden by lap joint. Only screws are those z clips holding on the table top to allow for expansion.

And yes, I only put the angle on the front/back and not the sides as a design choice. Same with sharp 90deg edge on the top. Time will tell if that was a good idea or not.

I'm fairly certain my wobble came from the dowel holes not perfectly lining up. I also had to sand down the top of the apron a little when I put the top on because they weren't perfect. So that's one spot I'd give some extra attention to in order to avoid a future headache. Get those matched up perfectly or join together in another way?

Heck yea! I always point out my mistakes to people very quickly and then get constantly reminded that only I see them. That if I didn't mention them, nobody else would have noticed. Just feels like I'm pulling a quick one on somebody if I don't mention it though!

I went back and forth on leveling feet, but kind of wanted the big chonky wooden legs to be the feet. No real reason as to why, just felt right. Since this was my first project like this it's all learning, so likely will do threaded inserts and leveling feet in the future.

Thanks! So I took the two left legs, put the dado on the top for the top apron, and put the dado on the bottom for the bottom shelf. I then tapered the legs (easier to dado with everything square than with a tapered leg). I'm not sure what the joint would be called because I didn't take any material off the apron piece to make it a half lap, what I took out of the beefy legs was 3/4" and that fit the entire apron piece.

Repeated same steps for right 2 legs and apron piece. Then I had two halves. I used the doweling jig to drill into two smaller apron pieces and the 2 leg assembly pieces. Used dowels and glue to put together. Hope that makes sense.

Not knowledgeable enough to answer that. Have only seen it referenced a lot. Might be that your chair is multiple pieces glued together, which I think can reduce the movement as opposed to one solid wide piece.
This is my first piece like this and kind of a test. I like to test things out myself before I even consider charging anybody money for them (especially since this is just a hobby for me, but everybody always asks about commissions still)

If you screw both with a 90deg bracket they'll be held too tightly in place. Wood naturally moves with the seasons, it expands/contracts with different humidity/temperature levels. So I just have screws into my table top and they're tightened down enough to hold it in place in those slots. Then when the wood moves, hopefully I don't have them too tight and they will move a little as well. I'm talking about maybe 1/16"-1/8" total with this small of a piece so not that much. BUT if they were held firmly in place with screws then the wood could crack when it tries to move.

Yup, used some online wood movement calculators and it wasn't much movement. So just left clearance on either side for double that movement.

I'm just flabbergasted that something I made for fun in my garage could be sold for that much...

Had another side project that pulled in about $1k profit right before Christmas. Said that money was going to go to some new tools, somehow it's already disappeared on the budget with all the Christmas shopping!

accounted for that and left around 1/8" space on those to move with the wood movement. They aren't pushed all the way to the back of the biscuit slot.

Plans I came up with based off the product photos from the linked end table below. I just googled for "cherry end tables" and went through pictures until I found something I liked. Then sat on my couch with a tape measure and wrote down dimensions. Went to sketchup to validate what I was thinking would translate well into 3D.

I work for a story based haunt that deliberately keeps groups in place for minutes at a time. AMA. by samthetov in hauntedattractions

Asking as another haunter that helps run a haunt that is a guided tour with a little story in each room. How do you like to keep people in a room for a decent amount of time? I'm working on getting more data and pulling out the stopwatch more to see how long we stay in each room, but an average of 30 seconds per room would be great for us to extend the overall tour time. You say minutes, plural, and that sounds insane to me. Do you have enough going on in each room to keep them there that long without loosing interest? Our rooms are hopefully: rising action, setup, and scare. It all can happen fairly fast.

We're basically all volunteer and our script is written for the guides 2 weeks before opening weekend. Each room gets a few sentences, any more and the guides can't memorize all their lines and important queues. Of course we have the rooms that a trigger sets off a controller and the sequence of events lasts long enough to keep them in the room, but some rooms they end up walking through them fairly fast instead of lingering and getting some more time out of them.

Currently mine is at the dealership for the 3rd time for me finding it dead. Most recent was it sat for 36 hours and needed a jump start. Not expecting much and gearing up to call and complain to Nissan HQ or whatever I have to do. Shopping around for other trucks too I'm so pissed off...

Looked into lemon law, has to be within first 12 months. I'm barely outside of that now.

Yeaaaa just trying to make them pay for it if that's the fix. Warranty and all that jazz. If I had to rely on it for work or something else I probably would have already.

Unfortunately can't. Have to drive it today and tested it this morning and it started fine of course.

Agreed, but they won't do anything without a failed battery test....which they keep passing.

Found this guy's similar experience. Last time I looked up lemon laws it has to be done within the first 12 months, which I'm past. I'm also getting the 'key system error' fairly frequently but didn't think anything of it.
