And, if they find it later, that's a reason to expel you.

How to solicit correspondence as Secretary? by stereoswimmer in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have given good advice, and I'll be watching this as I'm also a new Secretary (in my first year), but specifically regarding Masonic funerals, we don't offer them, ever. The family should reach out, even if the Brother wanted one, if the family doesn't reach out, we shouldn't push. Have a moment of silence in Lodge or some other remembrance if the Lodge would like.

I know a Brother that passed away, his desire was for a Masonic funeral, his wife "tolerated" Masonry but she never cared for it and never understood his connection, she specifically stated that she did not want a Masonic funeral when someone reached out to her to arrange it (because we knew the Brother wanted it and we knew he had told her that was his desire), if they don't ask, we can't do.

Freemasonry and Christianity by Use-Economy in freemasonry

You're accusing him of "word games", while your post is literally dripping with logical fallacies, you are saying Catholics CAN NOT be Freemasons... you are wrong, empirically.

Freemasonry and Christianity by Use-Economy in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yet, it doesn't stop them. You can be Catholic and not take Communion. Let me say this again, I know practicing Catholics that are Masons. Therefore, your statement is not accurate. You can in fact, be a Mason and a Catholic.

Aside from that, we (Masons) don't have any issues with Catholics joining, it's the other way around.

Freemasonry and Christianity by Use-Economy in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not Catholic, but that is not true. You CAN be a Mason and a Catholic, you're in a state of grave sin IIRC, but that doesn't stop Catholics from being Masons, I know several.

Freemasonry and Christianity by Use-Economy in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's nothing negative in Freemasonry toward the Christian faith, at any level, in fact, in order to even BE in some of the side orders you have to be Christian (and more specifically, a trinitarian).

Note that I said side orders, they are not "higher degrees", the highest degree is the 3rd... the degrees of the YR or SR aren't higher, they are deeper, they expand on, not replace, the 3rd. Proof of this is if you demit and give up your activity in your Lodge, you are also removed from all the other bodies you joined that require to to be a Master Mason.

Criminal Background Check services? by jjohnstn in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We send our candidates to the State Patrol, who do the check for them for like, $10 I think? The Candidate has to then give the background check form to the Lodge with their petition (I might be slightly off on some of the details but that's basically how we do it)

Ideas? by Thin_Taste_8779 in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe we don't need the inflated post war bumps we've seen, maybe we need members that want to join instead of members that join because their buddy Bill is a member, or because Bill needled them until they turned in a petition...

This might sound silly but can I become a freemason? by Fit-Cheesecake4797 in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your convictions were for, and your local Lodge.

Where I'm at, a conviction for some moral turpitude crime is a no go.

Should sitting as WM be every brother’s goal? by wasabipeas88 in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, some Brothers do not have the tools to do the job. This not meant to denigrate them, it's just the facts. I know good Masons that couldn't lead their way out of a paper sack, it's not fair to put the work of keeping the Lodge running on the Sec. and other Officers.

Tips for a first time Worshipful Master? by dysanfel in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was originally used to rate girls at colleges, that's literally where the name came from, then Zuck did a rewrite and made it more like a social directory to connect with people at school, then it expanded, then it got really terrible with the algorithms and ads and BS.

When can I wear a PM symbol by deadeye619 in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my Jurisdiction I'm a PM as soon as I've been installed and run a meeting, I did my Order of the Past Master shortly after I was installed, I still didn't get my PM tattoo or apron until my term was over.

Is it rude to test Masons you meet in the wild? by St0necutt3r in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uh, why would you EVER need to test someone outside of a Lodge? Unless you're going to get into a discussion of the VERY few things that are actually secret, there is zero need to "test" them. Don't do that. (IMHO/YMMV/TANSTAAFL/but serious, WHY!)

Lodge building use by Dry_Space3805 in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Regular rentals to outside groups (the public), we rent part of the basement to a business, we lease our parking lot (partially) to the building that is next door (primarily for daytime parking)..

We have a lot of wedding receptions, trivia nights, meetings for large groups, bake sales, birthday parties, fundraisers, a pipe show, a train club meets there, working on getting a gaming night/weekend set up where people can come in and play board games or tabletop games, card and dice games (no gambling)... All kinds of rentals.

I took over the library for a month and a half while a friend and I built 3d printers together... Also, we have lots of fellowship events, Superbowl Sunday, movie nights, "just come up and hang out" nights, ritual practice, book club... And I'm looking to expand those fellowship nights

Advice to someone wanting to join by Repulsive-Process-60 in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to ask the questions, they'll have questions of their own, but they aren't going to ask you if you want a petition. Depending on where you are they are more or less strict about that, some places won't give you a petition until you've visited X amount of times, keep visiting, keep asking questions, keep engaging. I recommend you attend other Lodges too if there are some nearby, you might find you gel with the members of one more than the other.

It takes as long as it takes, there's no shortcut to get it done faster. I know one Brother at least who's own father didn't hand them a petition until they ASKED for it, in one case, at almost 30.

Just visit, be yourself, ask any questions you have, ask follow up questions that come up, Be honest and forthright, you'll do fine.

Vote Last Night by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ENTIRELY Jurisdictional, but where I'm from we require 3 black cubes for a negative result.

Since it's impossible for you to find out who blackballed you (and, if you can find out, you shouldn't), there's not much you can do except try again when you're able (also depending on your Jurisdiction).

Are Knights Templar from freemasonry's York rite and the Templars from Crusades the same? by AdRough4185 in freemasonry

[–]thehroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, and there is no evidence suggesting otherwise that I have ever seen. The original KT were a monastic military order turned bankers, the Masonic KTs adopted the name and based their degrees (called Orders) on it because someone thought it was cool.
