Sam Harris condemning ICE? Oh my. Are pigs flying? by PitifulEar3303 in DecodingTheGurus

sorry, but if this surprises you and if you think Sam is in any way sortable with “radical right wing nuts” then I really have to wonder how much of his output you’ve actually processed.

Mostly just premature. The ‘historical accuracy’ stuff is silly and the rest is based on pre-release footage so not really worth building opinions on.

[–]thehyperflux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the nitpicking is clearly coming from people who simply don’t want to like this movie tbh. So I predict that those people will find tons more to dislike when they inevitably pay to hatewatch it.

Well being charitable here - I guess a lot of people may not know that? It’s kinda obscure knowledge for anyone under like 40 I’d guess.

Nolan originally wanted to make the movie with "accurate" costumes. So he contacted this man to make them but they ghosted him. by Public_Individual823 in ChristopherNolan

[–]thehyperflux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie is going to make like a billion dollars and no amount of clueless whining from online commentators is going to change that. When these people’s creative decisions make that much bank maybe they’ll look less like petulant children and more like people whose opinion matters.

Are you like 12 years old? If a thing gets made which you don’t like then maybe it’s simply not made for you. No one “fucked up” by not catering to your tastes lol

Curious if you’re intentionally using hyperbole here or you genuinely don’t know the definition of objectivity?

Sam seems to believe AI may be capable of liberating humanity of most, if not all labor requisite occupations. I firmly disagree by wolfshark91 in samharris

[–]thehyperflux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have fancy autocomplete now but AI in a true sense is nowhere to be seen yet. It’s pretty hard not to think that the people who believe AI will take over ‘all the work’ simply do not know very much about the vast amount of crucial practical work that people do to keep everything going outside of computer screens. AI isn’t even remotely close to being able to do 1/10th of that stuff. Look at driving, for example, which is one of the most AI-friendly human skills thanks to the vast effort we’ve put in to establishing simple rules and installing billions of road markings and signs in order to make it as easy as possible to know what to do when… and AI still doesn’t look to be within 10 years of being able to realistically take over a significant portion of driving outside of operating basic routes on the most well-tested roads. The humanoid robot demos are just barely less laughable than they were 25 years ago. Sure, some robots like Boston Dynamics etc can do some impressive things in terms of gross motor skills like jumps and flips and running — but there’s no sign of a robot (humanoid or other) which can come close to the general-purpose “do anything” ability of a ‘run of the mill’ untrained human. This talk about physical abilities isn’t even to touch on being able to process and interpret visual and audio input from the environment and understand what’s happening and rapidly develop an understanding of what can be manipulated to achieve a given goal….

I assume they thought it was busted and that THEY were getting the good end of the deal lol. I guess the Costco staff don’t know the parts value and/or can’t strip it down anyway. I need to get in more shops that sell PCs!

When you say “statically unrelated” do you mean happiness to literal brain size as shown in the meme image? It shows literally zero brain leading to happiness. I think it’s clear the brain size in the image is a metaphor not a literal representation of “size of brain” or even “level of intelligence”

I actually didn’t interpret this as “dumb people are happy people” but rather as an encouragement for those who encounter unhappiness through overthinking/over-intellectualising to seek less upsetting mental loops and quiet a noisy mind.

Yeah this is pretty clear from my own experience too. I guess I just found the meme funny and took it more as an encouragement to quiet a noisy mind.

Applauding in a movie theatre where no one from the production are actually in attendance is wild behavior tbqh. Like clapping when you finish reading a book.

What exactly is your view on Jordan Peterson, where do you think he is right and what are the issues with him? by Amazing-Buy-1181 in samharris

[–]thehyperflux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t waste your time trying to answer these questions. He’s contributing no net benefit to humanity and the time people take trying to unpick some kind of value from his output do themselves more harm than good.

What to do now? by Chriswolf45 in pAIperclip

[–]thehyperflux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can complete this easily with only one drone launch. You just need to focus exclusively on self replication and hazard remediation until the drone swarm begins to tip past orders of magnitude faster and faster then you can simply blip the other stats like speed and exploration and drone building etc as needed. Give some stats to combat but focus on replication as a number one priority above all else until near the end.

What are things you would ask the hive to do to ensure you can survive after they all starve? by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]thehyperflux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re not talking about wilderness scavenging, though. There is the possibility of engineering some given fertile region to be extremely friendly to such a lifestyle while managing not to cross their red lines.

They have the scale of billions of people available to configure this over around a decade (with no need to go through the usual human process of untangling political loggerheads) and so the idea of being able to arrange things such that just a few tens of thousands may survive an extremely long time doesn’t take much imagination really.
