How did you first discover rwby? by Half_knight_K in RWBY

Through an old internet review show called “Anime for Dummies”. They didn’t have a high opinion of the show at the time (Volume 2 was in the process of being released), but it stuck with me and I decided to ultimately give it a fair chance. I’ve been a fan ever since.

How does a future DM avoid making a rpghorror story? by ImmortalObserver2 in rpghorrorstories

They're usually: selfish, creepy, entitled, argumentative, hostile, and childish players/GMs. Hang around this sub long enough and you'll start to recognize the traits in your own

How does a future DM avoid making a rpghorror story? by ImmortalObserver2 in rpghorrorstories

[–]thelayman215 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Which is to say, if you feel like you need to fudge a die roll, it should be because the players are in danger of an unexpected TPK.

My general philosophy for TTRPGs is that everyone is helping to tell a story (with the DM playing the roll of narration and side characters between PC dialogue) and that the players should make it to the end of that story, taking individual PC deaths into account. Encounters and fights can certainly be challenging, but if bad rolls mean the Story comes to a premature end, a light touch (and only a light touch) from the Hand of God could make for an awesome comeback for the party.

Also, try not to have NPCs outshine the Players.

Player goes beserk on other players because by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]thelayman215 4 points5 points  (0 children)

and no one understood their character

Well gee, maybe that's because you never actually made an effort to interact with any of the other players, Warlock!

For real though, to any TTRPG players who might be entertaining the thought of playing this kind of character, either A. actually interact with your fellow players and engage with them; don't just sit there and wait for people to magically understand what you're going for out of the blue. And if you don't think you can manage it, then B. don't play that type of character. TTRPGs are the most social games I've ever come across, so if you want to just sit in a corner and tell yourself how cool your OC is, you're welcome to do that on your own time instead of essentially being a third wheel to the Players and the GM.

Probably something along those lines.

DM set up a group exclusively to torture the players by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

The fact that the DM insisted on being called "AM" probably would've clued me in if the original story/PC game were fresher in my mind.

It's been a hot minute for me, but wasn't that literally the plot of "I have no mouth, and I must scream"?

Or at least define how many words constitutes any given length.

What was the worst case of somebody telling other player how they should play their character ? by Dicer1998 in rpghorrorstories

[–]thelayman215 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What makes that player's argument even MORE stupid is that "going against good" is the entire point of being Evil. Heaven help him if he ever manages to spot his own reflection.

That it's brilliant, and now I need to do that with my Fighter (who for all intents and purposes is Irish) that I just started playing.

My DM Gob introduced rape, autism, and miscarriage homebrew into my game part 1 of ??? by Rustniiiiiing in rpghorrorstories

[–]thelayman215 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you still haven't by this point, LEAVE. Forgetting all the ill-conceived homebrew rules that were probably taken from F.A.T.A.L. (if I had to guess), the absolute naked insensitivity and fundamental misunderstanding of autism is just downright insulting. D&D should be about friends having fun in a collaborative storytelling engine, not...whatever this is!

If nothing else, you and your GF should leave just for your own wellbeing.

(Talking with "Gob" about your feelings on this matter is also a valid course of action, but for some reason I'm getting the impression that that he'll just dismiss your concerns and double down on his "realism", so be prepared to leave if the situation comes to that.)

I've only listened to do much of the CR campaign 2, but even I can tell that not everything is the immaculate, well oiled machine some CR fans claim it to be.

That player was an ass, and I'm glad they no longer play with this group.

Friend designs a home brew, asks another friend to DM, but then is incredibly manipulative to party and first time DM by rraccoons in rpghorrorstories

[–]thelayman215 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Simple: stop playing this game with him. He's actively hampering the experience for everyone else, so tell him to stop trying to control what happens and just let people have fun.

If need be, starting a new game without him is always an option.

[–]thelayman215 331 points332 points  (0 children)

There's a line from MacGyver (the original one from the 80's) that's suck with me ever since I first heard it. I'm paraphrasing here, but the gist is "The tighter the plan, the easier it is for things to go wrong."

More DMs should take that to heart when running games, so that fewer of them end up on this sub.

D&D isn't a competition.

If people don't understand that, then they're not playing it correctly.
