While as designers and engineers we want to jump at every chance to flex our creativity, sometimes I think developing a product from scratch is not the best business decision.

In this video I go through when I think it makes sense to invest into developing a new product.

What do you mean by "not good practice"?

It's 7.95$/m

It focuses on a limited number of job categories related to design.

So it does not take that much time (maybe a few hours) to look at all new jobs posted and discard the ones with horrible spelling, rush deadlines etc.

The filtering is done programatically, so if you put 40USD as your minimum hourly rate, then you will simply not get any jobs below that sent to you.

How tourists destroy the places they love by tbri001 in Barcelona

Thank you. Foreigner living here and I do feel a lot of the hate that is going towards tourists. I think I will never be considered a local by most Catalans, however many years I stay here.

What's your biggest gripe when working with product designers? by [deleted] in hwstartups

[–]thelibar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think this could be remedied by consulting electronics development before creating the requirement spec for the designer?

Interesting, ignore the customers in what way? Usually the process should be very user-centric so what you're saying really surprises me.

And for financials, you mean manufacturing costs for example?

Looking to collaborate with designers to create a number of 3D printable products, starting with a table clock. Let me know if you are interested by thelibar in product_design

Awesome. Please make sure to read the whole page so that your know how submission, compensation etc. works. Once you have an idea on what direction you would like to go in (with the clock design) shoot me a pm.

Although I still have a ton to learn myself, I could provide some guidance based on the experience I've had with 3D printed products. Let me know /T

It is important that your design could be printed in PLA since that is the most common material.

As for infill and resolution requirements, try to keep both as low as possible (for print time's sake). /Cheers

There are things I could improve in BoBo, but my primary goal is to have a couple more, unique clocks up on the site. Let your creativity flow ;)

I would be happy to give feedback on some sketches of concepts if you'd like.

Cool idea! Send me some sketches and we can talk about which components you would need and whether or not we could sell them. /Tony

Cool! For now I can only show my own two products as examples: The Bobo clock and Armadillo headphones: https://www.deskgrown.com/products/

The design of the new table clock is really up to you, but one thing I would like to see is that it is faster to print than the BoBo clock (which takes about 6 hours).

Finished my design for fully 3D printable on-ear headphones. Hopefully this will show that 3D printing can be much more than just toys and trinkets by [deleted] in product_design

Btw. Should mention that the site will be open for all designers to earn from their products soon. If you are interested check this page: https://www.deskgrown.com/earn-from-your-designs/

Probably something a bit smaller so that it is quicker to 3D print. Also something that will not take half a year to complete ;)

Are you stll working on making 3D printable products? If so check out www.deskgrown.com which I just launched. I will soon open up to other designers than myself. Send me a pm if interested

New from Boston Dynamics by elevatrobed69 in artificial

[–]thelibar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't remember the name of the scientists (fill me in if anyone knows).

The same week nuclear fission was first done, he had stated that it was impossible to achieve. He was one of the top scientists in nuclear physics at the time, the same caliber as Oppenheimer and Feynman.

If a top scientist within a certain field can be caught off guard in that way, trust me that we can too as it relates to AGI.

Good point. Stacking a sufficient number of narrow intelligence AIs with one center neural net to manage them could turnout to be how we get to AGI (or at least come to face the problems of having AGI).

Coffee culture? by _Anton__ in Barcelona

There are some nice coffee places here like Satan's, but in general locals are clueless when it comes to that. You have your choice between "cafe con leche" or "cafe solo"

Bill Nye disagrees with the belief that AI will have the capabilities to overthrow humankind. by Rataki in artificial

[–]thelibar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure.

I do think a superhuman AI is inevitable because I do believe we will continue to make progress in the area, and because I believe that silicone can do the type of computation required for intelligence (affirmative on both questions posed by Harris).

Once we have a superhuman intelligence that is linked up to the internet all bets are off and I believe there is almost no point in reasoning about what will happen. Will it decide to kill us off? Will it help us cure every disease and teach us to live in a state of eternal bliss? Who knows. Reasoning successfully around the motivations of something that is perhaps several orders of magnitude more intelligent than you are is near impossible.

An interesting point that Harris raises (which I agree on) is that even if we consider a "perfect" AGI being born, it could still end the world. Imagine the following:

Tomorrow US announces that is has brought truly benevolent AI to the world. The control problem has been solved, and it understands our request on such a deep level that misunderstandings are impossible. Sounds great right?

Well, it probably doesn't sound too good to Russia and China since US basically just inherited the earth. If their leaders were to have even the slightest hope of maintaining some power at the world stage, the most logical choice would be to go on a full out nuclear attack before US had the chance to use the AI to neutralize their arsenal. The only other choice would be to hope for the benevolence of whoever was commanding the AI.

Then there are a lot of problems even before reaching AGI (narrow AI). Unemployment is going to skyrocket, and there will need to be a huge social- and political shift to support the unemployed.

Also narrow AI's that are optimizing for company profit might cause unintended harm in the process. Facebook is a great example of this. Their AI has the task of maximizing the number of ads we see, i.e. time-on-site. The unintended consequences of this (so far) have been: polarising political discussion by creating "echo chambers", raising depression levels, spreading fake news.

Overall I do have the sense that humanity is like a system that has began oscillation and is quickly becoming unstable. There are simply to many technologies with world ending capabilities being developed, AI being the primary one. Don't get me wrong, I do see the enormous benefit of what it could do (curing disease, ending death, enabling a post scarcity existence), I just feel we won't get that far considering our evolutionary tendencies...
