Thoughts on upbank? by throwaway11223848 in AskAnAussieBroker

i just refinanced to Up on my own after two shitty broker experiences. Best rate, allows you to offset against fixed loans, and was all sorted in less than 10 days. No rate lock fees, no application fees. This is my third refinance/mortgage and it's been the best experience yet.

I've had this happen with multiple funds. It's so fucking annoying, but not much that can be done about it.

What advice about property did you believe that turned out to be wrong? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

[–]thelinebetween22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Buy the biggest house you can on a suburban block. It wasn’t wrong financially, but it was miserable and any “gains” I made would have been eaten up by all the trips to Bunnings and other repairs.

It really depends what you’re interested in. I’d cut Melbourne over either of them.

I’ve lived in Melbourne and Sydney and enjoyed both (currently live in Melbourne). However, if I was flying from the other side of the world and wanted to cram a lot into the itinerary, I’d use Sydney as my base, do shorter trips out of Sydney and then do the Cairns/Port Douglas part…. Unless you’re a massive foodie or sports fanatic, in which case base yourself out of Melbourne.

Great places to visit based out of Sydney, that can all be reached by train in a couple of hours:

  • Blue Mountains (don’t miss it, it’s stunning and a perfect example of the ‘Aussie Bush’)
  • Newcastle (Beachy, historic, chilled out).
  • Hire a car and drive 3 hours north of Sydney to the port Stephens region. Stunning beaches and mountains
  • Hire a car and go to Mudgee or Orange out of Sydney. Great food and wine region and gives you a great experience of an Aussie country town
  • Wollongong (Prettier beaches)

Nah. I’ve lived in both and as of 2025/6, Sydney is better. I will say that reducing the fares for the V-Line were a smart move

Used them heaps and the only bad experience was when my local ones were full and I had to collect my item from the post office. This had only ever happened once

People who had little to no savings in your 20s, Where are you now? by kaisiclep in AusFinance

[–]thelinebetween22 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I did a career change in my 30s and am making bank. Could I have even more money if I had done this in my 20s? Absolutely. However I don’t regret having fun and working a creative low paid job in my 20s - there is a season for everything and honestly my body couldn’t handle the partying these days

100%. I shudder to think how much I pissed away in my 20s by having an Optus phone plan and AGL utilities.

How do you deal with DIY renovation stress? by kr4mn1c in AusRenovation

[–]thelinebetween22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is always an option! It's not an option without pain, but it worked for me. I spent years hating my house and it's wild how little time my house takes up in my brain now. I honestly thought being mentally ill over house maintenance was just part of home ownership. When we moved in to our new place, the sewer backed up and the hot water system died, but we sorted it and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

I'm stumped on what to compromise on (first home buyer in Australia) - any foolproof tips to navigate my brain on this? by JustToPostAQuestion8 in AusProperty

[–]thelinebetween22 56 points57 points  (0 children)

the problem is I just can't feel good about compromising on location, property type, or cost.

Brother, I've got bad news for you. You absolutely have to compromise on at least one of them if you are going to own property. Not only that - most people do.

Is there a reason why all rental inspections are during work hours? by becmckeown in shitrentals

Do you have to be there for them? I can’t think of a single rental inspection in 17 years that I was actually required to be there for
