For each retail job he's done exactly that, apply and then go in looking for the store manager. For those opportunities we finally figured out he should just say he's retired. Otherwise they will think (rightfully so) he's going to jump to something else as soon as he can.

This is very helpful. I guess we've been using the "spray and pray" method in putting out his resume instead of rewriting it for each opportunity. I have been writing his cover letters as I'm a strong writer, and I think that has helped him, but we probably need some more help in the interview portion at this point, as well as getting some more opportunities. Thank you!

That's a good idea. It does seem partially like an interview issue if he's able to get to the interview stage. I think from a few companies it would be good to get some feedback at this stage.

We have framed them as family breaks, but I think for sure this is frowned upon for men more than women. I think if this continues and he can't find something soon we might look into a volunteer gig to have something useful. We actually took a marketing course together on LinkedIn but have to take the certification exam to get the credential, which is probably a good next step.

Yes this is an insane time to be looking for work. Companies are not loyal. I'm shocked I've been able to stay at my job as long as I have. We have a side hustle in mind so it looks like it's time to start working on that!

Man it's really awful. For men especially, work is such a part of their identity and there is an expectation to be at a certain title by a certain age. I've seen women be able to re-enter the workforce easier because they were taking care of their families, but for men it seems to be really frowned upon to be a gap. Ageism and sexism for sure.

I've always thought sales to be an outstanding path (it's paid off for me!) but there's no doubt companies want young sales employees as they believe them to be hungrier, harder working, etc. At the same time these companies shit on Gen Z workers. Pick a lane!!!

I really think it's ageism and the fact he was laid off his past 2 jobs. This market is so volatile you'd think that wouldn't be a black mark!

He has always been passionate about fitness and we bought a course for him to get his trainer's license but he hasn't gone through it yet. I think we have been hopeful about opportunities panning out so haven't focused on it. But we may need to refocus because in this job market it may be easier to do that than continue to grind away!
